Real Estate[1] is an American indie rock[2] band hailing from Ridgewood, New Jersey, and currently living in Brooklyn, New York.[3][4]

Biography

In 2008, singer and guitarist Martin Courtney, guitarist Matt Mondanile (Ducktails), bassist Alex Bleeker (of Alex Bleeker and the Freeks), and drummer Etienne Pierre Duguay formed Real Estate in Ridgewood, New Jersey. In 2011 Jackson Pollis replaced Duguay on drums and Jonah Maurer joined the band on keys and guitar. The band is merely influenced by The Feelies, as Real Estate said to Still in Rock.[5]

After issuing singles on the Underwater Peoples and Woodsist labels, the band's 2009 self-titled debut received critical acclaim, including an 8.5 rating and Best New Music tag from Pitchfork Media.[6] Review aggregator Metacritic gave the album a normalised rating of 79%, indicating "generally favourable reviews".[7] Tours followed, supporting acts such as Girls, Kurt Vile, Woods, and Deerhunter. In 2010, Real Estate performed at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago and the Primavera Sound Festival[8] in Barcelona.

In 2011, Real Estate signed with the Domino Recording Company. The group issued their sophomore record, Days, on October 18, 2011. The album received positive reviews, including a rating of 76% on Metacritic[9] and 8.7 on Pitchfork.[10] Later that year, The Fader featured Real Estate on the cover of Issue #76.[11] 2012 saw the band perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California and the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago.

In 2013, Real Estate announced they were in the process of recording a third studio album. After a series of photos posted on Instagram, on January 13, 2014 at midnight EST, Real Estate released a stream of their new single "Talking Backwards" via their website,[12] and announced the title of their third album was going to be Atlas. The album was released March 3 (UK) 4th (US), 2014 on Domino Recording Co.[3][13][14] Keyboardist Matt Kallman joined the band during recording of the album, replacing Maurer.[15]

Real Estate is also scheduled to perform at the 2014 Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago.
