The Rockhead (Bothragonus swanii, also known as the Deep-pitted poacher or the Deep-pitted sea-poacher[2]) is a fish in the family Agonidae (poachers).[3] It was described by Franz Steindachner in 1876, originally in the genus Hypsagonus.[4] It is a marine, temperate water-dwelling fish which is known from the eastern Pacific Ocean, including Alaska, Carmel Bay, and California, USA. It dwells at a depth range of 0–18 metres, and inhabits intertidal regions. Males can reach a maximum total length of 8.9 centimetres.[3]
The species epithet "swanii" refers to James G. Swan of Port Townsend, Washington.[3] The Rockhead spawns nearshore, during the months of January–May in the California Current region.[5] Its diet consists of benthic shrimp and crabs.[6]
