The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toamasina (Latin: Toamasinen(sis)) is an archdiocese located in the city of Toamasina. It was elevated to the rank of Metropolitan Archdiocese by Pope Benedict XVI on Friday, February 26, 2010. The Ecclesiastical Province of Toamasina will have as suffragan dioceses the dioceses of Ambatondrazaka, Moramanga, and Fenoarivo-Atsinana.

History

  • June 18, 1935: Established as Apostolic Prefecture of Vatomandry from the Apostolic Vicariate of Fianarantsoa and Apostolic Vicariate of Tananarive
  • May 25, 1939: Promoted as Apostolic Vicariate of Tamatave
  • September 14, 1955: Promoted as Diocese of Tamatave
  • January 31, 1990: Renamed as Diocese of Toamasina
  • February 26, 2010: Promoted as Archdiocese of Toamasina
