Ryan Allen Fowler (born May 20, 1982 in Redington Shores, Florida) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League, who played for the Dallas Cowboys, the Tennessee Titans and the New York Jets. He played college football at Duke University.

Early years

Fowler attended Seminole High School before moving on to Duke University, where he became the first player to lead the team in tackles in all of his four seasons of eligibility. He was also a four-year starter (2 years at outside linebacker and 2 at middle linebacker).

Professional career

Dallas Cowboys

He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys in 2004. He spent most of his rookie season on the practice squad and was activated in two games. In 2005, he was a backup inside linebacker, appearing in 14 games (3 starts).

In 2006, he lost the battle for a starting linebacker spot against teammate Bradie James, but would lead the team in special teams tackles with 24.[1]

Tennessee Titans

As a restricted free agent, Fowler signed an offer sheet with the Tennessee Titans on March 12, 2007, with the Cowboys choosing not to match the Titans' offer.[2]

One June 9, 2008, it was announced that he was under investigation in connection with a steroids case involving NFL dealer David Jacobs, although he was never formally accused of any wrongdoing.[3] He finished the season with 4 starts at middle linebacker and 27 tackles (2 for loss).

On September 28, 2008, Fowler was benched by the Titans in favor of 2006 4th round draft pick, Stephen Tulloch.[4] Fowler was waived on September 5, 2009.[5]

New York Jets

Fowler was signed by the New York Jets on September 8, 2009, with the team releasing fullback Jason Davis to make room on the roster.[6] He was not re-signed at the end of the season.
