Sabae (鯖江市, Sabae-shi) is a city located in Fukui Prefecture, Japan. The city was founded on January 15, 1955.

As of June 1, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 68,703, with 22,229 households and a population density of 810.65 persons per km². The total area is 84.75 km².

Economy

Sabae is one of the largest manufacturing centers of eyeglass frames in Japan. Sabae is also home to a significant chemical and rayon industry.

Sport

In 1995, the city was host to the World Gymnastics Championships (Sun Dome Fukui).

Parks

Nishiyama koen (West Mountain Park) is particularly beautiful in springtime, when hundreds of azaleas trees bloom on the slopes. The effect turns the park into a glorious island of pink blossoms in an otherwise drab industrial city.[citation needed]

Ancient sites

The ruins of Mitsumine Castle are located within the city.
