Sharon Rooney (born 22 October 1988) is a Scottish actress. She is known for her roles as Rae Earl in My Mad Fat Diary,[1][2] Sophie in Two Doors Down and Dawn in Brief Encounters.

Life and career

At the age of 16, Rooney left school to pursue her career in acting.[3] She enrolled on a performing arts course at Hull University.[3] She performed as a stand-up comedian,[4] and toured with a play in various schools across Britain.[5]

Rooney was cast for her first television role, that of Rae Earl in My Mad Fat Diary, a drama about a young woman who is released from a psychiatric facility.[6] The show was a success for E4 and Rooney received a BAFTA nomination at the British Academy Scotland Awards.[7][8] The Guardian's Sam Wollaston wrote "Sharon Rooney's performance in the lead is natural, effortless and utterly believable."[9] The role also saw her nominated for a Royal Television Society award in 2014.[10] In 2014, she was nominated in the Entertainment category at the 9th Young Scot Awards but lost to Nicholas McDonald.[11]

Rooney played a small part in the Sherlock episode "The Empty Hearse" in 2014.[12]

In January 2016 filming began for ITV's drama Brief Encounters, set in 1982 and revolving around four women who become involved in Ann Summers party planning. Brief Encounters debuted in July 2016, and stars Dame Penelope Wilton, Sophie Rundle, and Angela Griffin.[13]

She played "Miss Atlantis" in the 2019 film Dumbo,[14] in which she performed the song "Baby Mine".[15]
