History

It was bought at an unknown date by Charles I of England as a work by Giorgione. Following the execution of the king, it was sold in 1650 to De Critz and Co. In 1660, on the English Restoration, it was recovered by Charles II of England. It was exhibited at the Whitehall Palace then Kensington Palace and finally transferred to Hampton Court in 1833.
