Simorgh Alborz (Persian/Pashto: سیمرغ البرز) or Alborz Phoenixes Mazar is a football team in Afghanistan.[1] They play in the Afghan Premier League. It was founded in August 2012 by the creation of the Afghan Premier League and its players have been chosen through a casting-show called Maidon-E-Sabz (Green Field). Based in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, the club represents the provinces of Balkh, Samangan, Sar-e Pol, Jowzjan, and Faryab in the northwestern region of Afghanistan.
They have claimed both Runners Up positions in the two years of the Afghan Premier League, losing 2–1 to Toofan and 3–1 to Shaheen.
The Simorgh is the mythical creature – a large, graceful, winged bird – which is referred to in many famous poems. It is a benevolent, wise and loving creature but is also capable of making great sacrifices. In the Shahnameh, Zal, the son of Saam,, is rescued after being abandoned at the Alborz mountain by the simorgh that lives at the peak of this mountain. The simorgh is also mentioned in many other poetry including Fariddun Attar's ‘Conference of the Birds’, where the hoopoe leads a group of thirty birds in search of the simorgh.
The Simorgh Alborz football team represents northwestern Afghanistan including the historical region of Balkh.[1]
