Sly Cooper is an upcoming American-Canadian 3D computer-animated action/adventure comedy film based on the platforming video game series of the same name by Sony Computer Entertainment, specifically the 2002 video game Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus.[1] It will be produced and distributed by Cinema Management Group. Sony Computer Entertainment, its series developer, will play a role in the film’s production, screenplay, character development, and animation consulting. The film will be directed and written by Kevin Munroe (who also directed the 2007 animated film, TMNT), and produced by Brad Foxhoven and David Wohl. The film will star voice actors, including Ian James Corlett replacing Kevin Miller[2] as the titular character of the same name, Matt Olsen and Chris Murphy reprise their voice roles as Bentley and Murray respectively. The film scheduled for a theatrical release on September 25, 2016.[3][4]

Plot

The film tells the story of Sly Cooper, an orphaned raccoon and honorable master thief, and his childhood friends and partners in crime, including Bentley, a small green box turtle (and the brains), and Murray, a large pink hippopotamus (and the brawn). Sly has come from a long line of talented, international master thieves, and he is catapulted on a global adventure. Sly races on to recover pages from an ancient book called the "Thievius Raccoonus", as described in Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, before it falls in the hands of Clockwerk, Sly's nemesis and an evil metallic owl who vowed on ending the Cooper family name.[5]

Cast

The film will feature returning voice actors from the video game series, with the exception of Kevin Miller, who originally did the voice of Sly Cooper in the video game series.[6][7]

While it has been said Corlett has been cast as Sly Cooper, it has been said by the original video game voice actor Kevin Miller on his podcast that the cast list for the movie is not yet official. Chris Murphy (Murray) and Matt Olsen (Bentley) themselves do not even know if they are officially casted or not.[8] It has also been confirmed that two more characters, Carmelita Fox and Clockwerk, will be featured in the film.[9]

Production

The film adaptation of Sly Cooper has been announced with two official teaser trailers released through YouTube on January 28, 2014. Senior Director Asad Qizilbash of First Party Games Marketing at SCEA stated: "As one of our most storied and fan favorite PlayStation franchises, we are excited to see the story of Sly premier on the big screen for the first time. "We have a great partnership with Rainmaker and Blockade Entertainment and we're looking forward to seeing Sly reimagined in a full-feature movie to offer both fans and newcomers alike a chance to become reacquainted with one of our most beloved heroes."[10]

In an article from Front Towards Gamer, Robert Beach wrote that "From a Facebook post, Rainmaker Entertainment and Blockade Entertainment plan to transform Suckerpunch’s and Sanzaru’s trio of thieves to the silver screen in 2016. The Sly Cooper Movie (working title) is set as an origins story telling how the three met in an orphanage and Sly’s motivation to find the Cooper Clan’s book of secrets. Dedicated fans of Sly will notice the film resembles Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, the first game in the series back in 2002."[11]

Development

David Wohl, vice president of Development and producer of Sly Cooper, quoted about the film that won't show of the time that Sly and his gang spent getting to know each other in the orphanage: "In the film, Sly and the gang are already together, though they are far from being so great at what they do." The choice over changing in art style from cel-shaded to fully computer graphic animation wasn't easy. Brad Foxhoven, the film's producer and CEO of Blockade Entertainment, have said that "the global film market can lean towards pure CG animated films. As much as we love the cel-shaded look of the game, we felt that it would not be held up in the big screen collectively."[12]

In an article on Digital Spy that was posted by Matthew Reynolds, it is clearly stated as "the Sly Cooper film based on the platforming franchise is in development by Rainmaker and Blockade with a blessing of its creator Sucker Punch, which will debut on the big screen in cinemas 2016."[13]

The score is composed by Peter McConnell, who similarly composed the soundtracks for every single game in the series except the first one. This marks McConnell's debut as a feature film composer.

Release

Sly Cooper is set for a theatrical release in early 2016.[14][15] In an article on CinemaBlend, it states as "looking like the world's most furriest criminal who will steal a bit of the spotlight on a silver screen in a couple years as Sony announces a CG animated film of the franchise, slated to be released sometime in 2016."[16] Although, because the Ratchet and Clank movie has been delayed to 2016, it is unknown if the movie will be similarly delayed until 2017 or retain its 2016 release schedule.
