Snezhinsk (Russian: Сне́жинск, IPA: [ˈsnʲeʐɨnsk]) is a closed town in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia. Population: 48,810 (2010 Census);[1] 50,451 (2002 Census).[5]

History

Founded in 1957, it was known as Chelyabinsk-70 until 1991.[citation needed] During the Soviet era, it had a closed status and not shown on maps. Additionally, civil flights over it were forbidden. Town status was granted to it in 1993.[citation needed]

Administrative and municipal status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, it is, together with two rural localities, incorporated as the Town of Snezhinsk—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[2] As a municipal division, the Town of Snezhinsk is incorporated as Snezhinsky Urban Okrug.[2]

Science

Snezhinsk is one of two centers of the Russian nuclear program (the other is Sarov) and is built around a scientific research institute—" the All-Russian Scientific Research Center of Technical Physics—Federal Nuclear Center".

International relations

Snezhinsk is a sister city of Livermore, California, United States.[6]
