Sriharikota is a barrier island off the Bay of Bengal coast located in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, India. It houses the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, one of the two satellite launch centres in India (the other being the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station in Thiruvananthapuram). Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launches satellites using multistage rockets such as the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle and the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle from Sriharikota.[1]

Location

Sriharikota is partly located in Sullurpeta mandal and partly located in Tada mandal in Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh and separates Pulicat Lake from the Bay of Bengal[2] The nearest town and railway station is Sullurpeta. It is 105 km north of Chennai city.

Demographics and history

Sriharkota island is a space city located at Pulicat Lake on the Bay of Bengal. Telugu is the official language. But a large number of Tamil-speaking fishery community have lived on the island since ancient times that's why here tamil is to be considered as minority language. The large number of scientists, engineers and other personnel in the ISRO space centre and their families are from other parts of India and generally communicate among themselves in Hindi and English.

When the space centre was established in 1971, the ancestral residents of the island were shifted to new residences located near NH-16 at thondur village near Tada. Now the island completely belongs to the ISRO space centre and is isolated with high level of security and access control.

Climate

The climate of Sriharikota is tropical wet and dry (Aw; bordering on As) in the Köppen–Geiger climate classification system.
