Stéphane Da Costa (born July 11, 1989) is a French ice hockey player currently playing for the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL). A forward, Da Costa was the 2010 winner of the Hockey Commissioners’ Association and the Hockey East Rookie of the Year awards. He played college hockey at Merrimack.[1][2]

Playing career

A native of Paris, Da Costa is the son of a French father and Polish mother. He has two brothers, Teddy and Gabriel, who also play hockey; both of them began their careers in the Poland with Zagłębie Sosnowiec before moving to the French Ligue Magnus in 2010.[3] He began playing hockey at age three. He moved to the United States to play junior hockey at age seventeen though he did not speak English.[4] After playing one year in the North American Hockey League with the Texas Tornado, he moved to the USHL to play for the Sioux City Musketeers. After two years with the Musketeers, Da Costa matriculated to Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts. He was very successful in his rookie season, winning multiple Rookie of the Year awards. Though he received offers from NHL teams, he decided to return to Merrimack for his sophomore year.[5] Da Costa was very successful in the 2010–11 season, leading the team in points. He was sidelined in February 2011, however, by a knee injury.[6] He returned to action in early March.[7]

He played with the French National Team at the 2009 and 2010 Ice Hockey World Championships.[8][9]

On March 31, 2011, Da Costa signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Ottawa Senators.[10] Da Costa becomes the sixth player born in France to play in the NHL, joining Cristobal Huet, Philippe Bozon, Pat Daley, Paul MacLean and Andre Peloffy, and the third French-born and trained NHL player (Bozon and Huet).[3][11] He made his NHL debut April 2, 2011 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.[12]
