St. Matthew's University (SMU) is a for-profit private university located in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands in the British West Indies. It comprises the School of Medicine and the School of Veterinary Medicine, which confer M.D. and D.V.M. degrees, respectively.

History

St. Matthews, Grand Cayman

It was founded in Belize in 1997. Under interim president B.D. Owens the school moved to the Cayman Islands in 2002.Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page). The school was acquired by Greenwich, Connecticut-based Equinox Capital in conjunction with Chicago-based Prairie Capital in 2005.[3]

Accreditation

SMU is chartered by the government of Cayman Islands to confer the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) degrees.[4]

SMU is accredited by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM), an independent organization based in Ireland that accredits medical schools on behalf of several governments, including the government of the Cayman Islands. [5]

The US Department of Education's National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA) reviewed the ACCM and determined that the standards used to accredit SMU were comparable to the standards used to accredit medical schools in the United States. [5] The NCFMEA declared the "comparability" of the ACCM in 2002, 2004 and 2008. [6]

Licensing

St. Matthew's is approved by the New York State Department of Education[7], and the Florida Department of Education's Commission for Independent Education[8] for the purpose of providing clinical rotations in those states. St. Matthew's University School of Medicine graduates are currently eligible for medical licenses to practice in 38 states.

Graduates of St. Matthew's School of Medicine are currently not able to be licensed as physicians in the following states:

  • California: As a result of a site visit done by the Medical Board of California, SMU was officially disapproved for both training and licensure on February 18, 2005.[15][16]
  • Indiana: States SMU is disapproved as of December 5 2002.[9]
  • Kansas: State regulations require "a graduate of a school which has been in operation for not less than 15 years and the graduates of which have been licensed in another state or states which has standards similar to Kansas." [10]
  • North Dakota: States "graduates of [SMU] after the date of disapproval by the California Medical Board should not presume eligibility for either resident or permanent licensure in North Dakota."[11]
  • Texas: lists the school on their list of "Institutions Whose Degrees are Illegal to Use in Texas" as defined by Texas Code 61.302(11).[12][13]
