Stella Niagara Education Park is a Roman Catholic elementary school, convent, and hospitality center located in Stella Niagara, New York, within the town of Lewiston.[2][3][4] It was founded in 1908 by members of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity[5][6].

History

Stella Niagara Education Park was founded in 1835 in the Netherlands by the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity. [6] The first house opened in 1874 for the German parishes of St. Ann's and St. Michael's in downtown Buffalo, NY. [6] In 1907, a larger house was needed, so they found a location near the Niagara River in Lewiston. [6] This building originally operated as the Seminary of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart from 1908-1970.[6] At that time, it was a boarding school as well as a co-educational elementary school for high school girls.[6] The elementary school, Stella Niagara Cadet School, opened in 1935. In 1971, a charter was obtained through the New York State Board of Regents for the operation of what is now known as Stella Niagara Education Park.[6]

School

The Stella Niagara Education Park School starts at the Montessori preschool level (for children aged 3–5). Instruction extends through the eighth grade.[3][6] Its student body is approximately 250 students. It has a student/teacher ratio of 12:1.[3] The school focuses on teaching their students mentally, physically, and spiritually.[3] Students are encouraged to challenge themselves mentally, not only in school, but also in life.[6] A challenging curriculum is offered to students, which includes many core subjects as well as computer literacy, foreign languages, and art.[2][3][6] The School also requires the children to take regular physical education, like swimming and dancing classes, and encourages students to participate in school athletics. Spirituality: The School has mandatory religion classes. Mass is held at the school on religious holidays.

Hospitality center

The Center of Renewal is the name of the hospitality center on the site.[7] It offers religious and spiritual counseling, as well as group retreats and workshops.[7] This center also cares for many of the ill sisters living in the convent.
