The "beer bottle conspiracy" is generating a lot of headlines, especially as a potential test of the new (and never before used) anti-terrorism law in Illinois. See [1], [2], [3], [4], and [5], e.g. siafu (talk) 19:12, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Comment in Article re: Europe no longer in "existential crisis" as during Cold War - DUBIOUS, UNCITED
[edit]There is a comment in the body of this article that basically states Europe is no longer in an "existential crisis" as it was during the Cold War, and the statement is used to support the notion that NATO and similar Western defense alliances/strategies may be anachronistic and/or fail to pass a reasonable cost-benefit analysis from the standpoint of NATO member nations. First, this statement is NOT supported by any citation or reference. It is therefore NOT entitled to the benefit of the doubt. Second, the premise itself is at best highly questionable. Russia's proxy-war against Ukraine since early 2014 remains ongoing and has resulted in thousands of civilian, military, and paramiltary deaths, Ukraine's loss of its territorial integrity as recognised by the Minsk Accords of the 1990s via Russia's annexation of the Crimea (Ukrainian sovereign terrtitory under international law), and Russia's openly-clandestine means of waging war on Ukraine upon its eastern borders and oblasts (Donbas, etc.) via its provision of Russian officers, intelligence, hi-tech attack SAM and drone and tank weaponry to self-declared, break-away "people's republic's." No reasonable argument or facts show those insurgent organizations would have lasted even this long as viable forces if not for Russia's open (yet unplausibly denied) efforts to prop them up against the superior (at least, vis-a-vis the insurgents alone) might of the Ukrainian military. Also, with the UK considering leaving the EU and the Euro-zone economic power having suffered serious setbacks as the Euro has devalued over the past year and the Greek default debacle took place this past autumn, it is far from safe to take it for granted that the EU (let alont NATO) will hold together and remain a cohesive, viable entity in the coming years. Add all of this to the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, and one could easily posit Europe is indeed in the midst of an "existential crisis" at least as severe as the Cold-War period in the 1950's when the USSR invaded and took control of Hungary with sheer, unprovoked military force and democracy/elected and legitimate government overseen by the Rule of Law appeared at risk of being blotted out by the USSR's then-corrupt version of Marxist Communism, which was actually more akin to a totalitarian/autocratic fascist dictatorship in terms of governmental structure than what Lenin envisioned in his famous Theses. President Putin's control of the Russian "Federation" is at least as totalitarian/autocratic of a fascist dictatorship as was Stalinism during the 1930's-1950s. Hence Poland's efforts to build up a modern Air Force of sizeable force via purchase of squadrons of US F-16 fighter jets, as well as Finland's increased military spending and shadowing of Russia's reconnaisance missions as of late (which have reached from Australis to the coast of the state of Mississippi, USA, to Alask, USA, to near the coast of California, USA).
In defense of this statement about crisis, it does seem Russia is now proving weak, since it is starting to appear only an all-out, direct invasion without pulling-any-military-punches by Russian regular forces en masse (the core of the Russian Army and Air Force, in uniform and bearing proper insignia) would crush Ukraine. Most accounts report the "separatists" will sue for peace at ANY price if it means a true cease-fire and no more deaths - even if this means accepting the ultimate sovereignty of the Ukrainian nation. Still, this is very recent and the statement is essentially dubious given the timeline of events - and it is completey UNCITED, with no outside, third-party factual reference support. A DISCUSSION ON (a) REVISING THIS STATEMENT AND (b) SUPPORTING IT WITH VALID REFERENCE CITATION(S) TO ENSURE ITS ACCURACY, SEEMS WARRANTED. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NonamesleftOG (talk • contribs) 03:07, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
