0.5 million years
[edit]The article says "ABC island bears were discovered 0.5 million years ago" - what does this mean? Clearly not by humans there that long ago. Is it that evidence (fossils/frozen remains/something else) was found recently pointing to these bears (or at least some sort of bear in the ABC islands) that far back? 2A00:23C6:148A:9B01:18EE:94D4:76A9:6885 (talk) 12:43, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
hybridization in taxobox
[edit]This page had a {{taxobox}} which said the species was "U. arctos × U. maritimus", which (at least in my simplistic non-professional view) reflects text in the article saying that they have some polar bear lineage, specifically of the mitochondrial DNA. I changed the {{taxobox}} to a {{subspeciesbox}}, but in doing so, I found that {{subspeciesbox}} didn't play well with the hybridization at the species level, and I was unable to find a way to get it to do so.
However, I noticed that the references on the page (to GBIF and such) refer to the species as "arctos", not indicating anything about "maritimus". So, rather than just give up on {{subspeciesbox}}, I figured maybe the hybridization that was listed in {{taxobox}}'s "species" might have been overzealous rather than standard (like, nobody's ever called me a Homo s. × n. sapiens, as far as I know), and just used "arctos" in the {{subspeciesbox}}'s "species". I left all the hybridization stuff in the actual text of the article alone. But I thought I should put this note on the talk page in case someone who knows more than me (and perhaps knows that I've done something incorrectly here) sees it. - Rwv37 (talk) 21:49, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
