Genre Classification

[edit]

I think the Genre needs to be discussed. I think that it is clear that this is not a true Documentary; as it is not non-fiction. With that being said it most likely falls under one of the two, I guess three, following options

  • Docufiction - With this classification you can loosely argue that the incorporation of fictional elements from "alien worlds" into a diverse documentary about different life forms on earth. This also makes the assumption that the intent of the production is to showcase Earth and the incredibly diverse and resilient life forms that live on it. Which is where the argument kind of stops as at least 50% of each episode is spend discussing/showcasing alien worlds through the use of CGI. It also does not restage fictional versions of real world events; the fictional aspects of each episode are completely fictional.
  • Pseudo-documentary - With this classification you have a broader definition of a film that portrays fictional and scripted events in the form of a documentary. There is no restaging of current or past events with fictional elements incorporated for effect. There is also a clear uses of documentary techniques while also incorporating completely fictional creators and settings.
  • Both - There is also the argument of using both for its Genre. I'm not sure doing so would cause an confusion nor is truly redundant as neither terms are mutually exclusive.

Let me know your thoughts.

Docufiction seems fitting, since substantial portions of the series are set on Earth, and separate from the fictional alien scenes. Even if there is somewhat clunky language comparing the animals on Earth to the aliens, those segments are still nature documentary segments. A few reviews refer to Alien Worlds as a docufiction such as this one on Forbes. Rauisuchian (talk) 06:33, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
