Yucca schidigera

I removed the section on this plant, since it clearly indicated that yucca was used medicinally and for clothing, and made a point to say it was NOT an entheogen. This article is not titled, "Aztec use of plants," and use of plants for medicinal purposes such as treating a headache does not make those plants entheogens. Entheogen means "God inside us" and refers quite explicitly to the use of psychoactive plants for spiritual/religious purposes. It does not include the entire history of human use of plants for any purpose. 99.129.135.10 (talk) 14:30, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

Article title

Is there any particular reason why the article's title is capitalised? Unless "Entheogenic Complex" rates as a formally-defined compound noun (and a cursory search reveals only one other instance in which the two words are combined, so I guess it isn't), then it should probably be at Aztec entheogenic complex. Also, the use of these substances for shamanistic purposes was practised by most, if not all pre-Columbian Mesoamerican societies, including non-Aztec Nahua speakers and non-Nahua speakers alike- which would be good to note, if not expand upon, here.--cjllw | TALK 03:54, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

Sinicuichi

Sinicuichi is mentioned as one of the entheogens, but its page mentions nothing about psychoactive properties of the plant. Perhaps it needs an update or there should be a caveat here

  • None of the listed alkaloids are known as hallucinogens so this section is quite suspect. The whole article has a number of very dubious claims with no documentation. I've noted a couple. There is a lot of accurate information but, as pointed out elsewhere, the lack of in-text citations diminishes the value. The references ae also not the best available on this topic.Itzcoatl (talk) 06:50, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Expansion

How about turning this article into Mesoamerican use of entheogens, or just Mesoamerican entheogens? I doubt most of these were restricted to the Mexica or to Nahuatl-speakers. --Ptcamn (talk) 20:57, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for renaming the page, much clearer now.
Direct evidence may be sketchy, but the use of psychotropic substances among the (pre-Columbian) Maya has been written about before. I think that a pan-Mesoamerican article could readily be put together, without resorting to neoshamanistic sources. But unless anyone's got the time or is planning to start accumulating these refs, the article can probably get by under its present scope. --cjllw ʘ TALK 01:53, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

This is not a scientific or scholarly reference. ("Sometimes my balls even pulsate on thinking an erotic thought about my potential prospect: that shit has had me do all sorts of crazy."
