Change of name to John Lewis[edit]

it's obvious Lawsonrob feels passionately about the name change, but they are just opinion - not facts.

to keep in line with wikipedia's neutral point of view and verifiability policies, the article as worded previously needed to be changed.

Lawsonrob might have doubts about the name change being prompted by the staff, but you need to find a verifiable source to back it up... the page includes a link to a quote from the staff member who suggested it.

The claim that their was much local opposition to the name change... again a source is needed for this.

Similarly, if you think the 'majority' of shoppers still refer to it as bainbrige - then provide a source to back it up.

Merge with John Lewis (department store)[edit]

I'm recommending that this, and the other John Lewis articles for the individual stores in this chain be merged with the main article. I can't think of any reason to have separate articles for each store. --Bugwit grunt / scribbles 22:53, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

True, but many of the individual stores have a history as independent businesses under other names, which it is important to catalogue for posterity. If John Lewis is compacted into one entry, only the history of the core chain is likely to be preserved and this is by no means the full story - lawsonrob

World's First Department Store? What about David Jones?[edit]

Apparently this store was founded in 1849... David Jones was founded in 1838...

Should David Jones be noted as the first department store in the world, rather than Bainbridge's?

Or is there a technicality I'm not seeing.

Change of name to Bainbridge (department store)[edit]

I would like to rename this article as 'Bainbridge (department store)' via a page move once necessary technical changes to the existing redirect page Bainbridge (department store) are made by an administrator. My reasons for proposing this change are because the department store we're discussing was for most of its history always formally named as 'Bainbridge', firstly as 'Bainbridge & Co.' and then after the 1953 purchase by the John Lewis Partnership as 'Bainbridge'. The name 'Bainbridge's' is a colloquialism, indeed a commonly used name for the store we're discussing but really akin to calling Liberty in London 'Liberty's' or Tesco 'Tesco's'. The article name 'Bainbridge (department store)' would use the more proper formal name of the store and in common with other similar articles in use an established common style in '(department store)' to distinguish the article from those about places or people called Bainbridge. The formal name is not necessarily what should be used for the title of the article. For example, if the store company is/was registered as Bainbridge, or even showed Bainbridge as its branding, but in practical use everybody called it Bainbridge's then the article title should be Bainbridge's since that's what people would be looking for. You can always explain in the article about what the real name might be. The existing, still live, references, appear to predominantly call it Bainbridge's.
