Barbouti

[edit]

Twice I have removed a description of a dice game called 'barbouti' added by 81.236.222.109 . This page is about the helmet as it is the most common English language use of the term. Barbouti should be it's own page, and a disambiguation page used if it is commonly (mis-)spelled identically to Barbute.Mercutio.Wilder 19:45, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Name of article

[edit]

The title of the article should be moved to 'Barbuta' - the helmet was almost exclusively an Italian phenomenon and it should have its Italian name. 'Barbuta' is extensively used in English language sources, and the apparent English or French derivation 'barbute' is not used in Ewart Oakeshott's works, which are considered canonical for the typology of Medieval weapons and armour. citations needed

[edit]

@Urselius: I put a {{cn}} on "this served to strengthen the helmet without adding a significant amount of weight" because that sounds reasonable, but I'm no expert. I figured someone more knowledgeable coming along and adding a source would be more helpful.

I also put a {{cn}} on "Unlike the sallet, the barbute seems to have enjoyed little popularity outside Italy." because it sounds reasonable, but I don't have a copy of Oakeshott. Apparently you do. Snowman304|talk 10:13, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I just hate being given pointless jobs, fixing things that are not wrong, for the benefit of other people. I admit that 'fix this' notes irritate the hell out of me. Possibly to an irrational extent. 12:31, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
