According to the Tampa Tribune, Bartow Senior High School existed prior to 1969, as shown in these articles about the 1965 school choice plan, whereby blacks could choose to go to white schools and vice versa. [1],[2] I don't know when Summerlin became part of BHS, but I can see part of this article, and the related articel on Union Academy need some further work to get it right.Jacona (talk) 12:12, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to have been integrated in 1965 and merged in 1969. The 1938 source seems to be talking about the Junior High. FloridaArmy (talk) 13:33, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've seen several other sources as far back as 1926 that refer to Bartow High School. The 1965 choice plan was purely voluntary half-assed integration in an attempt to appease the feds. They weren't amused, resulting in true integration in 1969. As was typical, those in power did their best to preserve white legacy, keeping the name of the white school and demoting the black school for the lower grades, trying to rename the "black" name out of existence...same story as everywhere in the south. In any case, the Bartow High School name has been in use since at least 1926, so we've still got work to do - even if we only tell the "white" story, BHS was around for a long time, on the site of the original Summerlin...maybe it was known by both names, maybe there were two separate schools at one point, I don't know. I Just know we've still got work to do, but I doubt if I will work on it in the near future.Jacona (talk) 19:02, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
