Village?
[edit]Looking at a map of Berney Arms, the only buildings I can see are the windpump, the pub, a building labelled 'Ashtree Farm' and (some distance away) the railway station. The normal convention is that a settlement is a town if it has a market, a village if it has a church and a hamlet if it has neither. But I'm not totally that convinced this is a settlement, but rather just a named location. Certainly the OS gazeteer, which puports to list all settlements in the UK, does not have an entry for 'Berney Arms'.

- I know people who have been there. You are right. Other than the windpump, a few farm buildings, the pub, and the railway station, it is all fields, water and river. Definitely not a settlement. Across the river there are a few more buildings, but that isn't that relevant here. There is probably a sense of community though, fostered by the many boats going up and down the river in the summer, stopping off at the pub. So a water settlement centred on the pub, maybe, but not a true settlement in the strict definition of the term. I'll update the categories and article. Carcharoth 15:26, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
At one time it was a proper village/hamlet. It was abandoned, probably as a result of increased car use making it no longer practical to have a village with no roads. PaulJones 14:54, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
