Very simple. One of the effects is to release haemoglobin into the urine, which makes it very dark. Hence Black-Water

Another cultural reference[edit]

In "A Message from Charity", one of the episodes of the "new" series of "Twilight Zone", a 20th century male victim of the disease manages to "telepathically" contact a much earlier (17th or thereabouts century) female victim who lived in the same area, and they have a sort of "cross-temporal" romance with much drama.
