Canonical is not the same as natural, i believe[edit]
I think it is not true that canonical maps are "also called" natural maps. It is probably often (or even always) true that canonical maps are members of families of natural transformations, but nothing in the definition of a natural transformation makes it "canonical". Natural transformations are members of families of transformations that make certain diagrams commute. In fact, i am not event sure that a mathematical definition of a "canonical map" exists.
