Old Wounds[edit]

Tahle-quah?[edit]

"Ta-li" (ᏔᎵ) does mean "two" and "Ye-li-quu" (ᏰᎵᏊ) or "E-li-kwa" (ᎡᎵᏆ) means "enough". In Cherokee they would typically leave off syllables much like English speakers may shorten a word. "Ta-li-kwa" (ᏔᎵᏆ)/ "Ta-li-quu" (ᏔᎵᏊ) or "Tahlequah" is not a hard jump. I have heard this legend before so it is legitimately circulated. As far as the rest of the tradition stated, whether true or not, I can imagine the, not so distant, ancestors (1930's is when it is locally believed the legend was started) laughing about how they founded their capital in the Indian Territory. The -Ꮚ (-quu/-gwu) suffix mentioned means "only" or "just" when applied to a noun, so ᏔᎵᏊ means literally "only Two" or "just the two." And the terminal vowel is the most likely to be truncated. It's plausible, but the overall explanation given in the article leaves a bit to be desired in linguistic accuracy. I've certainly heard this general story a lot since I first started studying the language in the 90s... it's in a lot of the books along with ᎠᎹᏗᎦᏂᎬ/Nowata/There's no water there, Oklahoma. It would be easy to just say what I know to be true about each subject contained in this article, however, I looked for sources to clear up some of the citation requests. Eastern Band[edit]

This article completely leaves out the Eastern Band of Cherokee located in North Carolina. I will attempt over the next few days to spend some time cleaning up the article, adding information about the Eastern Band as well as adding citations. Restructuring[edit]

If there are no objections I want to restructure the article to give it more of a flow in explaining the society, with an emphasis on cultural practices and societal beliefs.
