Ordering of items

[edit]

I disagree with this ordering of the tree. Two criteria may be used:

1. What a reasonable person would expect to find by searching for "Clanwilliam".
2. Strict chronology.

By 1, the population of the barony (encompassing many towns) outstrips that of the South African town. It is more likely therefore, that the barony would engender more searches. By 2, the barony was created before the founding of any other town. All other references, whether to towns, rugby clubs or fish species, owe their origin to the barony.

From the above two, it's clear that the barony should have primacy. I propose to revert to the original creation unless somebody (a non partisan non-South African preferably) can convince me otherwise. Laurel Lodged (talk) 20:20, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I rearranged the article to follow Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages)#Order of entries, given that the primary topic is (currently) the South African town. If, as I have suggested at Talk:Clanwilliam, we make the primary topic a disambiguation page, then certainly we could change the order. (I really don't much care about the order.) - htonl (talk) 21:45, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As a matter of interest, what is the population of the barony? Clanwilliam town had, as of 2001, a population of 6,089. (The Canadian rural municipality has a population of 494, so it's definitely in last place.) - htonl (talk) 21:49, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Very crudely, the historic county of Tipperary, North and South currently has a pop. of 159 000. There were 14 historic baronies in this area so making allowance for larger pop. centres in other baronies (Clonmel, Nenagh), roughly 10 000 is a ball-park figure. (It should be noted that the pop of Ireland in the mid 19th century was considerably greater than it is today due to famine and mass emigration). Clanwilliam (disambiguation)Clanwilliam — See discussion at Talk:Clanwilliam, South Africa#Disambiguation. Currently Clanwilliam is a redirect to this page but it has history. htonl (talk) 22:11, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK. I can live with this. I may have been carried away by my passions above. This is a reasonable compromise. In particular, the re-naming of the South African town to "Clanwilliam, Western Cape" is good justice. - Laurel Lodged (talk) 12:17, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
