Spelling

[edit]

The correct spelling is Coeurl, not Couerl. That's the way it appears in the original novel of A. E. Van Vogt, The Voyage of the Space Beagle. It also appears in this form in several versions of the Final Fantasy video game. How can we solve this spelling problem? There is already an article Coeurl which redirects to Final Fantasy bestiary. I've put up a request to move it at Wikipedia:Requested moves. Axem Titanium 04:12, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Coloration

[edit]
"Its skin coloration is not mentioned, but it may be inferred from the title of the story that it is black."

Does it not have fur? Since it's cat-like I kind of assumed it did. --Iustinus 20:58, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

From the 5th para of Black Destroyer:

Coeurl crouched, an enormous catlike figure silhouetted against the dim reddish skyline, like a distorted etching of a black tiger resting on a black rock in a shadow world.

So, a black tiger. Not sure if it's black in color or in silhouette, but likely in color, from the title, as has been conjectured. This should be enough to describe its coloration, whether skin or fur, as black in the article. Login54321 (talk) 19:48, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Immortal?

[edit]

This creature is in the "fictional immortals" category, but the description of it does not say it is immortal. I don't know whether to fix this by changing the description or by removing it from the category. 64.161.114.2 (talk) 18:00, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Avatar

[edit]

While watching Avatar today, the native felinoid wildlife strongly reminded me of the Coeurl. While I can't locate first or second-hand evidence to back up the connection, should anything arise it should be added immediately. Cheers, 86.26.154.172 (talk) 01:07, 29 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation

[edit]

Does this have a canonical pronunciation? I can think of at least three possible ones, but I don't know which is right. I personally have always read it ['si ɚl], infuenced by various things with the root "coel" in them, but it could easily be something else. Origins

[edit]

I have reason to believe the word "Coeurl" originally meant "commoner" or "peasant", or something similar. This makes sense in the context of the Vogt stories. I haven't yet been able to rediscover my source for this so am writing this rather than editing the article. It may also have etymological links to "Cur" which is a) an insult and b) slang for a mongrel dog. Anyway, if anyone stumbles across some evidence, please amend. 82.22.244.179 (talk) 16:25, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
