Ferry

[edit]

The ferry connecting Corriverton to Nieuw Nickerie ceased functioning in 1998. There is now a new ferry which crosses the Corentyne about 20 miles up river. There is no regular public transport to the new ferry as it is little used. The fare is payable in US dollars, there is only one ferry a day, and the Suriname side links to Nieuw Nickerie with an un-metalled road which becomes unpassable during the rainy season. Local people often cross illegally using frequent speed boats that travel across from Springlands. These can be dangerous, and sometimes sink with loss of life.
