Second-largest coffeehouse chain in the world?
Costa Coffee is definitely not the second-largest coffeehouse chain in the world. Dunkin' Donuts has 10,900 outlets world-wide, Tim Hortons has 4,300. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.64.15.59 (talk) 14:39, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
It would of course depends on your definition of coffeehouse. McDonald's sells a lot of coffee. Is McDonald's a coffeehouse or just a burger restaurant that also happens to sell coffee? Probably 99% of people asked that question would answer: "Of course McDonalds's isn't a coffeehouse."
Dunkin' Donuts is more difficult to determine. About 60% of Dunkin' Donuts' revenue is coffee related. Some might say it is a coffeehouse that sells donuts. Some might say it is a donut restaurant that sells coffee.
As for Starbucks Coffee and Costa Coffee, they are without a doubt coffeehouses. The vast majority of Starbucks' and Costa's revenue are from coffee items (with food items coming in at about 17% for Starbucks). Using that narrow definition, Starbucks is the largest and Costa is the second largest.
Defining what is and isn't a coffeehouse is arbitrary, but you have to draw the line somewhere. Otherwise 7-Eleven (with its 56,000+ worldwide stores) would be the largest coffeehouse in the world (more than double the size of Starbucks). Limiting the definition of coffeehouse to Starbucks Coffee, Costa Coffee, and other establishments that receive the vast majority of their revenue from coffee seems fair. 183.76.159.224 (talk) 11:10, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
