Rollback of references added?

[edit]

Hi, some days ago I saw some "citation needed" marks in the article, and I filled them with references to explanations by world renowned DM Brennan Lee Mulligan in a youtube public session of his main show Dimension 20 from Dropout (specifically, from the first episode of the season Dungeons & Drag Queens, where he explains things more than usual since the players are newbies). The references were even pinpointed to the exact timestamp of the video where he explains the terms. Today I got a notification that User:Annh07 reverted those changes, and that feels wrong to me.

The edit is this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Role-playing_game_terms&diff=1181647315&oldid=1181646779

You could maybe argue that "Advantage" meaning throwing 2 dice and picking the best is a DnD specific thing that shouldn't be here? (which I don't know if it's true, because I don't know if other RPGs use that term or no), but at least the citation to an explanation of the meaning of "Natural" should be there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rusca8 (talkcontribs) 12:12, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Natural 1 and 20

[edit]

I have merged the content of the Natural_1 and the Natural_20 articles into this one. Feel free to rewrite this content if the original is not written terribly well or should be combined or shortened. --Xyzzyplugh 15:47, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good to me, but I think we should keep specific-RPG terms at least slightly separate from almost-all-RPG terms; as such, I've put in a subsection. Percy Snoodle 08:53, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article organization

[edit]

Yikes! This page looks like it needs some serious re-organization. I'm going to come up with a scheme and post it here for discussion. :-) אמר Steve Caruso (poll) 16:25, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My suggeston:

  • Game terms:
    • Game master
      • Dungeon Master
      • Storyteller
      • Story guide
      • Troup gaming
    • System
      • (Insert examples of systems here)
    • Adventure/Run
    • Campaign
    • Setting
    • Genre
    • Goals
      • GNS Theory
    • House rules

  • Character terms:
    • Character
    • Character sheet
    • Attributes
    • Skills
    • Powers
    • Saving throws
    • Points
      • Hit points
      • Magic points
      • Experience points
    • Level

  • Dice terms
    • XdX notation
    • Success
      • Critical success
    • Failure
      • Critical failure

  • Player terms
    • "In-character" vs "Out of character"
      • Out of character knowledge
    • Derogatory terms
      • Power gamer
      • Munchkin
      • Twink

  • System-specific terms
    • d20 terms
      • Natural 20
      • "Take a 20"
      • Natural 1
    • In Nomine terms
      • Divine Success
      • Diabolical failure
      • Risk
    • (etc., etc., etc.)

This breaks things down into several categories: Game, Character, Dice, Player, and System-specific terms. Sounds good? אמר Steve Caruso (poll) 16:44, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

With no objections, I'm going to start drafting a revised version of the article. אמר Steve Caruso (poll) 02:10, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See my comments on your talk page. You essentially took encyclopedic prose and made it into a non-alphabetical glossary that has (to me at least) less encyclopedic value. I'd keep the prose but I do agree it could use some reorganizing. Amatulic 17:50, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New article draft

[edit]

I've created an example page to display how the new article will look as I work on it. User:The_Thadman/RPG_terms_draft אמר Steve Caruso (poll) 14:40, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Does This Term Belong Here?

[edit]

I added a couple of terms previously which Percy Snoodle removed. I don't really have any argument with removing "handwaving", because although used, it is more of an import from math/physics, as Snoodle said, and not specific to RPGs. However, "rules lawyer" has been a major term in RPGs, at least in my neck of the woods, for over twenty years. Shouldn't it be included on this page? dungeon

[edit]

Inspite several references to it through descriptive words, there is no term for the use of "dungeon". There is also no link to dungeon crawl.Jinnai 19:42, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

THAC0 is a term specific to early editions of D&D. It should be removed.

[edit]

This term isn't a general use term for the hobby, it was removed in Third Edition and hasn't been relevant to the hobby at large since then. While the game it's from is obviously significant, THAC0 isn't a term used in other games. MisterGunpowder (talk) 03:13, 22 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say leave it be, as people do still play older editions of (A)D&D. ShawnIsHere: Now in colors 19:54, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
