koteka
Sorry, but I believe this doesn't belong in this article: "In some parts of the highlands, the koteka is traditionally worn by males in ceremonial contexts. Despite government efforts to suppress it, the use of the koteka as everyday dress by native males in the highlands is still very common." That is certainly true of the Western New Guinea highlands in Papua (Indonesian province), but not at all true of PNG. There is very little traditional use of the penis gourd in the highlands of PNG, apart from a few villages around Ok Tedi and Telefomin near the Indonesian border. There has been no government suppression of it at all in PNG that I'm aware of, at least since independence in 1975. The koteka and its suppression is mentioned in the Culture section of the Western New Guinea article. I'm removing "Despite government efforts to supress it, the use of the koteka as everyday dress by native males in the highlands is still very common" from this article. If you think it belongs in the PNG article, please provide a good source to back it up. -- Wantok 02:03, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Mathias Kauage died in 2003
Information in the 'PNG Gossip Newsletter' of 23 August 2003 (a somewhat more reliable source than the title suggests) is that Mathias Kauage died in 2003 aged 66. I will leave it to someone better versed in PNG artists to verify this.Benelong 05:46, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, added that to the article. Wantok 01:44, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
Reassessing
I'm going to change the assessment of this from B-class to Start-class: to my mind it's almost Stub-class, to be honest. This is an enormous and very rich topic which is, so far, very poorly covered. Looking forward to expanding it. Wantok (toktok) 02:11, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
