Why is this page here?[edit]

I think this article should be removed. In English, the word "department" is used to refer to the French "département." (See AHD department). ----Eric 18:52, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is the English Wikipedia going to have a redirect page for any French word that occurs in the encyclopedia? -Eric (talk) 19:07, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why shouldn't it? — Brian (talk) 22:59, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know--it seems superfluous and unnecessary to me. I was hoping to be enlightened as to its function. I think the en Wikipedia would become bloated if it had a redirect page for every foreign language word that occurs in the encyclopedia's text.
In any case, I don't think it should simply redirect to Departments of France, since the French word département has several other meanings (as in English) and I believe is used in several other French-speaking countries for their geographic and administrative divisions. I would say if it must exist, the page should redirect to the en page Department. -Eric (talk) 12:44, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you that the appropriate redirect target is department, and as to why we need the page, I can't see a compelling reason to delete it. Redirects are cheap and take up virtually no server space. Keep it, I say, but change it to point to the more generic page. — Brian (talk) 13:57, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay--thanks for the input! -Eric (talk) 14:43, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
