Notable recordings expansion

Just as M.C. Brown Shoes has requested, I would love to expand the Notable recording section but I don't know where to start. What kind of information about the albums could be added? It's kind of hard when there's no specific guideline. Douglasr007 00:50, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Free use image

Hi there! This is just to notify all of you that a free image has been located. It's from Flickr and its in the Commons. I uploaded it and it can be found here. (SUDUSER)85 13:04, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

The licensing on that flickr image isn't compatible with the Wikipedia Commons. The one found here is compatible, but quite blurry. Just64helpin 17:57, 28 April 2007 (UTC)
I found a Creative Commons picture of daft punk hereand i think it's much better then the one in the article Loser707 23:29, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
That is also incompatible with the Commons. Just64helpin 23:57, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Influences section

I really like the new Influences section but one question ponders me is the mention of Romanthony and Todd Edwards in "Teachers." I never heard their names in the song but perhaps were they acknowledged in long list of names in the Homework liner notes? Douglasr007 00:21, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

The heavy French accent makes it hard to make out, but they're in there. Besides that, the lyrical mentions are sourced in the "ROBOPOP" link. Just64helpin 18:39, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
Oh, I just found a site with the correct lyrics and I can make clear of the Todd Edwards but I guess the accent got to them when pronouncing Romanthony. Pretty neat since every lyric website I go to has the lyrics wrong. Figures. Thanks. Douglasr007 18:56, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
I have the liner right here in myhand, romanthony is mentioned in the shout-outs, but todd edwards is no where to be found, but at the same time,, bernard edwards and kenny edmonds sound kinda close, were those mentioned on the lyrics site
and off-topic for a second, looking through the notes i found R. Kelly to be a source, and through Kelly's wiki, it seems that he became popular in the early 90's (something i didn't know), is this the same R. Kelly or is there some other artist with the pen name —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 4.154.116.175 (talkcontribs).

I have been reading a book about the progress of French music and so far I have gotten that Taxi Girl and Giorgio Moroder as possible influences. I'm going to continue reading and hopefully add some interesting bits to related articles. Douglasr007 09:18, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Logo atop the infobox

To the user who keeps removing it: Please provide documentation that an appropriate logo does not belong there. There is no notation in image use policy or WP:MOS stating that it is not allowed. Please do not continue to remove good faith additions to the page when policy does not appear to explicitly state adding the logo is violating policy.

If you can show that your actions are in fact in line with wikipedia's guidelines and policies, then we can come to a consensus regarding the addition of the logo. // 3R1C 04:29, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

This clearly states that the logo should not be used in place of the name. Please do not add it there. Just64helpin 13:23, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
I fail to see what instance that policy says not to use the logo. Please explain your rationale for disallowing the use of the logo. // 3R1C 16:13, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
Perhaps I'm reading it wrong, so I'll copy paste it: Don't use the trademark in the text instead of the company name. See also Wikipedia:Logos. Just64helpin 21:30, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
Following some further reading beyond WP:LOGO, you're right I love daft punk, just not for the reason you state (at least by my interpretation of LOGO). On the other hand, WP:FUP does explicitly state that Fair use images may be used only in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are not covered under the fair use doctrine. They should never be used on templates. Anyone else have anything to say otherwise? // 3R1C 00:16, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
Is your WP:FUP argument for or against using the logo? The infobox itself is a template. Just64helpin 15:40, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
Said comment is in agreement that the logo is not appropriate. The FUP states that non-free images cannot be used in templates. Clear enough to me. Agreed? // 3R1C 05:37, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes. The "On the other hand" bit just threw me off. Just64helpin 17:08, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
I don't agree. The logo is not part of the template itself, and will not appear on every page using this template. It will only appear in this article. Therefore, as I see it, the logo is in the article namespace, and should be acceptable as fair use. -KingpinE7 03:19, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
It still isn't to be used in place of the band name. Just64helpin 16:52, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Labels

Sud is right, if you review Template:Infobox musical artist, you'll see that their standard is comma-separated values, not carriage returns, // 3R1C 14:37, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Stardust

Would it be worthwhile mentioning Bangalter's brief side project? Edcoomber 15:17, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

It's mentioned in the Thomas Bangalter article. Side projects from both members should be documented in the articles of the individual musicians. Just64helpin 17:13, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
There's also a link to the side project itself - Stardust (band) and the single "Music Sounds Better with You" Douglasr007 06:09, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

More media

Panasonic used a clip of Harder Better Faster Stronger for a short time in one of their cellphone commercials.—Preceding unsigned comment added by BizzyBody (talkcontribs)

Lots of ads use Daft Punk music. If the duo weren't involved in the specific ad, it isn't relevant enough for the Daft Punk article. However, it may be relevant in the article of the actual song. Just64helpin 11:07, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Electroma on DVD

It should be noted that Electroma is being released on DVD.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.2.138.198 (talkcontribs)

Do you have source for that? Just64helpin 11:40, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
I was able to find a source. [1] Douglasr007 23:45, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
We should wait until it's more widely sourced. Just64helpin 23:52, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
It's being released by an independent company. It seems fake but it's true. Virgin isn't going to pick it up as being a distributor of the film until more companies are interested in the film. Even though it's an independent company, it's still a DVD release. The DVD is only being released on PAL and is yet to see a US release. Douglasr007 23:55, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
The link doesn't seem to specify all of this information. If it did, I would put that up with the update. Just64helpin 00:00, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
Well, the least info I can provide with the DVD release is that it's real. An ebay auction (from stores selling the DVD) [2] provides the front and back covers of the DVD release. The back cover states that it's copyrighted by Daft Life. Daft Life is one of the companies Daft Punk created to have control of their material (Daft Life, Daft Trax, and Daft Arts) and it's the company that's the force of Daft Punk's Electroma. This is a real DVD release provided by the sources. I would add it. If a wider release becomes present then we can source from that. Douglasr007 00:09, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
eBay? I still think we should wait until more reputable publications report it. I won't war over it, though. Just64helpin 00:15, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Like I said, the ebay auctions are stores in Australia that are selling the DVD. Amazon has a US release set for June 19th. Douglasr007 00:20, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

An all-encompassing source for these findings would be preferred. Additional prose could then be edited into the article. As I said, i won't revert. Just64helpin 00:34, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

More on their impact perhaps?

Wouldn't it be a good idea to write a bit more on the impact they have had on other artists and bands? It feels like a huge lot of the big electronic acts nowadays are highly influenced by Daft Punk in different ways, and this says a lot about how big DP are. 84.217.139.126 11:46, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

You are free to expand the article with sourced content, preferably outside of the lead section. Just64helpin 11:55, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Alive tour DVD

i was wondering if daft punk is going to release a DVD after their alive tour. thank you for the answer 196.206.224.140 20:53, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Note of Sampling

I just recently found a source that states an interview from Thomas Bangalter where he confirms that half of the list from the Palms Out link is not true. Now, I have no idea what that half of the sampling is fake or even what samples he can confirm. Should we make a note in the Daft Punk related articles (or even here) about the sampling? We could add some information about how claims have been with Daft Punk's sampling. Douglasr007 06:43, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

It would definitely be of use in the Discovery article, since most of the samples listed are from that album. Just64helpin 09:58, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject

Hello. I have recently expressed a concern of starting a WikiProject for Daft Punk. If you're interested, please join in the discussion here. I want to see how many active people I have with Daft Punk are on here before I officially make a WP. Thank you. Douglasr007 04:50, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Mystery

"The mystery of their identity and the elaborate nature of their disguises has added to their international popularity.[3]"

i don't care if thats cited (as something which i can't check), its still POV and BS. There is no way to prove it. ergo, its out. if u really have to put it back in, use 'some believe...' or similar. ~ blahbalh —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 81.110.66.202 (talkcontribs).

Missing Single

There is a single missing from the Daft Punk discography. The single to "Something About Us". I find editing to be a little confusing and I have absolutely no clue how to begin adding a single to Wikipedia or the Daft Punk table at the bottom of their listing. There is already a listing for the single "Something about Us" by the group No Angels. I figure the Daft Punk single should be listed as "Something About Us (Daft Punk song)". I have a copy of the single and would gladly add the details for the album if somebody could get the entry started.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by JMacGill (talkcontribs).

"Something About Us" was only released as a promo single for Interstella 5555. It may not be notable enough to warrant its own article. Please see WP:N. Just64helpin 23:10, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
I'm very sure it was released as a single with 5 songs on them: On being a movie edit, the last track the original Something About Us from teh album and one song (I think the third) is a remix of Voyager, some Funk remix. Someone please confirm this. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 81.228.208.205 (talkcontribs).
The single exists, but that alone doesn't make it notable enough for a separate article. Just64helpin 23:11, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Actually, there's no notability guidelines under Songs. WP:SONGS#Notability. Douglasr007 00:13, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
On the contrary; from WP:MUSIC#Songs: Most songs do not merit an article and should redirect to another relevant article, such as for a prominent album or for the artist who wrote or prominently performed the song. A separate article is only appropriate when there is enough verifiable material to warrant a reasonably detailed article The KZA 00:20, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Some opinions on the first part

It reads like this currently: "After Daft Punk reached significant popularity in the late 1990s house movement in France, other artists such as Air, Cassius and Dimitri from Paris began to receive a similar amount of attention. [line break] Daft Punk is also credited for producing songs that were considered essential in the French house scene. [...]" To me this seems awkward, since "other artists such as Air, Cassius and Dimitri from Paris began to receive a similar amount of attention" is exactly what created the French house scene at the time. As it reads now, the two seem to be completely separate, which I find a bit misleading. 84.217.196.130 11:06, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Can you provide an example in this topic of how it could be reworded? Just64helpin 11:17, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
I kind of have to agree with it. Perhaps it such be reworded in a manner like the Homework article. Daft Punk increased popularity with the French touch genre and made some artists follow it.
  • Artists of the same genre: Air, Cassius, Dimitri from Paris, Dax Riders
  • Artists that followed the genre: The Supermen Lovers Douglasr007 01:06, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

US Tourdates

Contrary to popular belief, 1997 was not the last time they played in the USA til Coachella. They actually played in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2002 at the Winter Music Conference in Miami.

Origins of the name

I thought the name was coined by Dave Clarke, who saw them in a club in Paris and hated them. It was picked up in an interview with Clarke (maybe in Melody Maker). I can't find any reference to this though, nor the original review in MM. —Preceding unsigned comment added by John Hoar (talkcontribs) 13:23, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Details of the pyramid

Perhaps we can start a subsection with the "Live Performances" section about the pyramid live set. This link presents a lot of info about the team behind the pyramid. I know the Pitchfork Media link can also be used if it hasn't already been used. Douglasr007 19:01, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

I was actually thinking of starting up a "History" section over at Alive 2007 that would cover the details of the overall tour, including the visuals. Since we now have a wikiarticle specifically relating to the tour, I thought this would be the perfect place to start the section. Just64helpin 19:10, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
I guess Alive 2007 can include the details of the pyramid but you have to realize that their 2006 tour was different than their current tour in some ways - the encore and some differences in the songs. The main Daft Punk article needs to address both the 2006 and Alive 2007 tour. Douglasr007 19:18, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Yes, a summary of the differences between 2006 and 2007 would be appropriate in the Daft Punk article, if sourced. But an overall explanation of the actual physical pyramid theme (which remained unchanged for the tours) would be best fitted into Alive 2007. It would be the "main article" for that, essentially. Errors?

In the Human After All part of the history section the articles mentions a music video directed by Oliver Gondry. Should this be Michel Gondry? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.237.224.239 (talk) 05:40, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Nope, the source says Oliver Gondry, Michel's brother. Just64helpin 11:05, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

What is inside these helmets, tech-wise?

These must be real hi-tech helmets. I can only vaguely remember this in German music television or MTV that they could *WRITE* texts from those helmets!! So there must be a way for them to type them in inside?? Does anyone have a link where this technology is explained in detail? Would be damn interesting methinks. -andy 84.149.110.220 02:00, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Reorganized image layout

I have bold-ly reorganized the layout of the images. I think it looks more balanced, and thus, better. If you disagree, please discuss here. -- Bellwether BC 06:23, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Homework section

Can someone please reword the "Daft Punk's skills at producing filter..." paragraph in the Homework section of the article? The bit seems so out of place and provides no real description. Douglasr007 (talk) 18:01, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

Pyrmaid at Grammies

Daft Punk wore outfits similar to, if not identical to the ones they wore to the Sydney concert, and used the same pyrmaid from Sydney during their part in Knaye West's live performance of Stronger at the 2008 grammies on Febuary 10. 67.189.162.24 (talk) 02:17, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

I've added the basic information regarding the performance to the wikiarticle, based on a cited source. Sourced detail can be added if and when it becomes available. Just64helpin (talk) 03:51, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Also, I would guess the pyramid had the actors of Electroma in it and not the actual Daft Punk. The height of both guys were the same - Guy Man is smaller than Bangalter. Douglasr007 (talk) 04:08, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
That might be right, but we should stick to what sources say for now. Just64helpin (talk) 04:12, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Daft Punk's publicist issued a release confirming it was indeed them. Just64helpin (talk) 06:39, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

it was them[3] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.109.218.172 (talk) 02:09, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

It wasnt the pyramid they used in sydney. Sure it was them? Every where theyve appeared live they were positioned bangalter left guy man right (when facing them). And the way they moved looked like it was an actor exaggerating on robot-esque movement which they dont really do, guy man hardly ever moves excessively.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.107.115.130 (talkcontribs)
This really is WP:NOT the place for speculation. Just64helpin (talk) 11:25, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

This is the discussion section? I think my points are valid. Theres alot of evidence that goes against it being the real 2 up there. Like the height difference bangalter is noticably taller then guy man when i saw the performance guy man looked taller than bangalter. Daft Punks publicist said it was them? Who When where does it say this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.107.115.130 (talk) 11:58, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

The release was sent by email, as mentioned here. All of the "evidence" you are mentioning is original research. Just64helpin (talk) 12:46, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Concert

You know, I was just curious. At their concerts how do you know their actually playing the music and all. What if it's all prerecorded? And another thing, how do u know its actually Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter under those helmets? What if they just hired two guys to dress up as them and stand there and look pretty? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Blah114 (talkcontribs) 06:56, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

It's been mentioned many times that Daft Punk are against the use of pre-recorded music. Pedro has confirmed that the actual Daft Punk were in the pyramid - they wouldn't want to miss the opportunity to play their own music to their fans. The music during their recent live tour is difficult to say - the original studio material was available but they mixed live and on the fly. Each performance did have notable differences. Douglasr007 (talk) 04:37, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Fictional information

There appears to be a bunch of fictional nonsense interspersed throughout this article. I don't have time to verify the validity of every statement but I am quite certain that there is a lot of it. "Instead of dismissing the review, Bangalter and de Homem-Christo found it to be LOLarious." "We struggled so long to find [the precious lil name] Darlin', and this happened so quickly." --TheBlackViper (talk) 21:12, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Newer Song?

I should probably bring this to your attentions. On one of the music pages for MySpace, I noticed a song about a lady named Molley Connolly (spelling may be wrong), though now I cannot find it again. This may be a mistake on the part of the person who put it on MySpace, but I am not sure. If I find the song again, I'll try to let you guys know here.

Genre(s)

I'm new to discussion, so if a moderator could edit the format of this current post, that would be appreciated. I was browsing the page and saw that daft punk was listed as "house." I myself believe Daft Punk only has traces of house in their Human After All album. If it were me writing this, I would write Electronica or Electro-Rock, rather than House. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Scalesjordan (talkcontribs) 21:14, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

They are pioneers of the French house movement. Their music is house - even though I would say Human After All has the least amount of house in it. The album was more like an introduction to the electro house that has been growing today. Douglasr007 (talk) 07:58, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
The infobox is meant to list genres. "Electronica" and "Electro-rock" are both vague, wide-encompassing terms, not genres. Just64helpin (talk) 01:32, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Genre(s) expansion - Overall sound + samples

Would it be too subjective to make a section on their overall sound? And is there an article on the samples used? if not, ought it not be incorporated into the article? 80.62.83.195 (talk) 21:58, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

The article currently mentions specific sounds related to specific releases in each "era", as well as an "Influence" section that notes artists who affected Daft Punk's sound. A separate section on an overall sound would seem redundant, and would be considered original research if not sourced properly. The samples used by Daft Punk are included in the articles about specific Daft Punk recordings. Please also keep in mind that Daft Punk have denied using some samples. Just64helpin (talk) 22:27, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Iggy Pop's Leather Jacket???

In the section on their visual element it compares the robot suits to the KISS makeup and "the leather jacket worn by Iggy Pop". This strikes me as a pretty silly comparison. For one thing, the wikipedia article on Iggy Pop doesn't mention any leather jacket, and I've certainly never heard of it aside from this reference. It seems that other full costumes would be a better comparison, a la Slipknot, or those guys who won Eurovision a few years ago, or GWAR, etc. Matterson52 (talk) 01:08, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Female Vocalisations in Older Music?

This fantastic video on YouTube must surely get a mention in some Daft Punk in popular culture section. Could this re-direct please be removed if there is no intention to mention 'Daft Hands' in the article, as it would avoid others having to waste their time reading this article rather than not getting a match for their search. Savlonn (talk) 08:01, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

GA Review

This review is transcluded from Talk:Daft Punk/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Generally very good work here. Just a few notes. I was on the verge of passing it outright until I found the link to the bootlegged video. Unless I'm mistaken, Daft Punk owns creative copyright on that performance so linking to the video is a violation of the contributory copyright infringement clause at WP:COPYRIGHT. Other than that, recommend moving citations to the end of sentences and reviewing the article for wikilinks: the first instance of each noteworthy name or term should be linked, but not subsequent instances. I went in and helped a little here: adding links to Los Angeles and Coney Island while removing a duplicate link to one of the group's releases. Please drop me a line when you're ready for a second review. Best, DurovaCharge! 23:59, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

I'd just like to point out that "the subsequent linking of an important item distant from its previous occurrence in an article may occasionally be appropriate in a table or in a subsection to which readers may jump directly" as stated in WP:MOSLINK. just64helpin (talk) 03:32, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
The contributory copyright infringement concern is unrelated to that manual of style section. In other words, there's no right way of linking to something if policy prohibits linking to it at all. DurovaCharge! 03:45, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
I was referring to your recommendation for reviewing the article for duplicate wikilinks, not your comment on copyright. just64helpin (talk) 04:08, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Okay, promoting. One other note moving forward (since I suppose you're headed to FAC with this): I'm assuming the getamac hosting at YouTube is done with the permission of Apple, since it's positive press for Apple and appears to come from a popular YouTube account with an established website. Not sure how that would fly at the next level. Otherwise quite impressive. Best wishes, DurovaCharge! 03:54, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Daft Punk - Going deaf?

Rumor has it that they might be, due to the loud music they play at concerts. Personally, I think this is untrue. Raise your hands if you agree.

I have heard on numerous occasions that Thomas Bangalter has been going deaf due to live concerts (since 1997) and have been hearing that it was one of the main reasons why Daft Punk didn't tour (as a group - Bangalter and Guy Manuel did tour with Cassius back in 03 but not together...and well Bangalter was also active with Stardust and DJ Falcon since touring as Daft Punk in 1997) until a decade later. I believe Bangalter wears special headphones now - I forget what they are called but they provide noise isolation. As much for a source...none. Doing a Google search does bring up little discussion of it but as stated before sourcing this is impossible and it's pretty much a rumor. Douglasr007 (talk) 07:37, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
I knew it!

According to the discogs entry on Thomas Bangalter at http://www.discogs.com/artist/Thomas+Bangalter:

"It must also be noted that outside Daft Punk, Bangalter stopped his DJing career due to ear problems."

But you'd think that almost EVERY singer would be going deaf, lots and lots of concerts are as loud as theirs.
Of course, they're French, so it's probably a side effect from eating snails. 72.135.100.144 (talk) 04:54, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Daft Gang

What happened to their speculated new song 'Daft Gang'? It was removed from here and their MySpace. Does anyone have any info? 82.170.218.89 (talk) 18:07, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

What happened

Just the other day, there was a section in the article called "Fourth Album Era" Talking about the possible future of Daft Punk with their 4th album and whatnot...who removed it and why? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.135.100.144 (talk) 04:17, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Apparently some user made up hoaxery by saying Kanye West was working with Daft Punk in a new project. This was removed. Currently the final paragraph of the "Human After All era" section mentions Daft Punk exploring new projects and visiting their studio. However, Daft Punk have not formally announced a fourth studio album. A while back their manager even refuted publications stating the Daft were in the process of making a new album. just64helpin (talk) 05:02, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
Man, that's not good! (Yeah, I'm the person who made the original message) I love daft punk, and if they follow the pattern, the next one should be coming in 09. It would really stink if they didn't.
In fact, they've been really strange lately. First they make an album and only devote 6 weeks to it, then they don't provide a soundtrack for their OWN MOVIE! Then they didn't tour in 2008, and now they aren't clear to us if they're going to make another album. :( 72.135.100.144 (talk) 04:32, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
They haven't toured as a group in 8 years before the 2006 and Alive 2007 tours. Give them a break. They broke out and directed a film and experimented with it. They purposely made HAA as "the opposite of Discovery" as which they wanted to spend a limited amount of time with the album and see what they can do with it. I'm still hoping for a March 2009 release for a new album but Bangalter has been busy as his wife just had a 2nd child and this touring has been a lot of work for both members. There's still hope. Yeah, you're right. :) 72.135.100.144 (talk) 21:53, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Human After All - Featured on Television.

Not really sure if this is worth mentioning, but Daft Punk's Human After All (single) was featured on a T.V. programme entitled Ireland's Favourite Christmas Toys. Again, delete this if it is not worth mentioning.
