Name[edit]

The name of the race changes almost every year. Commentators on Channel 4 have taken to calling it the "December Gold Cup". Tigerboy1966  01:30, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I was actually thinking of doing a move to that very title a couple of weeks back - seems crazy to keep changing the name every year. There are plenty of references online to the December Gold Cup as well, and redirects will take care of the various titles. I'll do the move later. --Bcp67 (talk) 09:07, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Showing my age, but for me it will always be the "Massey-Ferguson"! Tigerboy1966  10:26, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Showing mine - me too - much as the 3m 5f chase at Sandown will always be the Whitbread! --Bcp67 (talk) 10:28, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Moved the page today, there are enough online references to December Gold Cup to make it verifiable. --Bcp67 (talk) 12:44, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Smart move. On the flat Group Races have to have a "basic name" to which the sponsorship is added (even though sometimes the basic name appears in brackets "Registered as..."). This is usually followed in NH, but some races never had a "basic name" which seems to mean that they can be called whatever the sponsor likes. Sponsorship changes can cause problems: look at Night Nurse (horse) for instance: I'm sure some of those redlinks must relate to races which are still run today. And that race at Cheltenham in November is still the "Mackeson" in my mind. Tigerboy1966  16:28, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah - probably the races which started so long ago don't have a registered title. I moved the Victor Chandler Chase today as well, which is going to be run under its registered title for the first time on Saturday. At least one of Night Nurse's wins still does exist, the Mandarin, but that's become a run-of-the-mill handicap chase. Always a tricky issue this sponsored / registered title business! Thanks for your help anyway. --Bcp67 (talk) 18:59, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
