updates here
I've just started taking photographs of various landmarks in Delhi, as well as compiling images like maps, etc. I aim to create a detailed set of articles for this page, relating to practically every aspect of the city. Mail me at viksit at gmail dot com if you can contribute. -- Viksit Gaur 14:00, Feb 12, 2005 [+5:30 GMT]
Could someone please sort out what are the differences between Delhi (the city) and New Delhi (the city)? To my understanding, they are placed at the same location, one being a colonial british extension of the other, today forming a single muncipality (with 12 mio inhabitants). Is this right? -- till we *) 16:22, Aug 3, 2003 (UTC)
- They are placed next to each other, not in the same location. And the National capital territory of Delhi covers both of them as well as some more regions. The article doesn't distinguish between Delhi (the city) and Delhi (the NCT) properly. Delhi (the NCT) is on the way to attaining statehood and not New Delhi (the city) as mentioned in the New Delhi article. -- Paddu 08:39, 27 Feb 2004 (UTC)
There's no point in keeping all these separate aricles and then having empty sections. If your intention is to create a travel guide, see http://www.wikitravel.org. Let's keep this an enclyclopedia. --Jiang, Talk 01:34, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Why is the place called Delhi ? whats the history behind the name ? Jay 14:19, 9 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Hotels? Does this belong in a encyclopedia? Yak 22:52, Feb 16, 2004 (UTC)
There really is no point in keeping separate sections. Most people, including natives do not really distinguish between Delhi and New Delhi anymore. It's like having a page for London and another for Greater London and putting the parts of the history of the city in both pages separately. Also it still reads too much like a travel guide with not enough history or contemporary life. Anurag Garg 10:50, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
mehrauli
Is anybody knows about a river which passed through (near) mehrauli ? or between mehrauli and DLF? What is the reason behind geographic pattern of rangpuri etc.?
Lots of opinion not enough facts
There is a lot of opinion in this article, more than is necessary in an encyclopaedia. Some sentences which should be moderated for tone are
1. Economically, Delhi is India's most affluent urban center
Mumbai and Bangalore also have a claim and mumbai is probably the most affluent. What is the metric chosen to measure affluence?
2. primary destination for FDI in India
Proof? I would say it is more likely that Bangalore gets more FDI than Delhi.
3. The nation's automobile, media and consumer goods industry are centered in Delhi
There maybe some Media HQs in Delhi but automobile and consumer good manufacturing units are not concentrated around Delhi.
4. Delhi has in recent years emerged as India's cultural and intellectual capital as well.
Based on what?
5. Delhi is also considered India's education capital given the high quality, depth and diversity of its schools, universities, libraries and think-tanks
Bangalore probably has a big claim with IISc, NCBS, other research organizations.
Sex Ratio
What does a sex ratio of 821 mean?
821 women for every 1000 men.
Urdu spelling of Delhi
I see the Urdu spelling of Delhi is given as دیلی, I was always under the impression it was دلّی?
Dieresis 11:05, 12 November 2005 (UTC) I fixed it.
History
The History of Delhi section needs to be condensed along with creation of a separate History of Delhi article. --Just my 2 cents -- Hemanshu 19:57, August 15, 2005 (UTC)
Crime
Why isn't there a section?
lots of issues | leave me a message 19:48, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
Hindi spelling
Hi,
The Hindi spelling is given as दिल्ली. Should it not be िदल्ली as this is how one would write it on paper.
- No. Please read this: Wikipedia:Enabling complex text support for Indic scripts. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 17:03, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
Ok cool thanks!!
Merge
There is absolutely no reason to have two seperate articles on Delhi and National Capital Territory of Delhi. Delhi was first a union territory in India and later on after the commencement of the 69th amendment to the Indian constitution, Delhi was given a status of a National Capital Territory. As one can notice, most of the content of the National Capital Territory of Delhi is similar to that of the Delhi article. --Deepak|वार्ता 05:14, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
Sources??
Too many tall claims in the fourth para (with superlatives in most cases) without support. Can we get some numbers or references?
As an indicator, Delhi has more cars plying its roads than India's other four 'metros', Bangalore, Calcutta, Chennai and Bombay combined - Huh?? Any proof? I hope you are not comparing NCT and the metro areas of other cities.
Reply to above-- Here's just one link repeating the above claim http://www.undp.org.in/events/ict-del/prdgs/dayone/dr-morepen.ppt
and is widely considered to have the best transport and utilities infrastructure in the country - How widely?
It has in recent years emerged as an entrepôt for multi-nationals and is the primary destination for FDI in India - Seriously doubt it.
A preferred destination due to the quantity and high calibre of English speakers - That's not true of Delhi alone; it's true of most of India
- I do agree that the language of the first three to five paras is very unencyclopedic and lacks sources. I am trying to clean up the article but that will take time. --Deepak|वार्ता 16:56, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks. I will try to work on it myself.
Union territory?
The 2nd sentence states that NCT is a union territory, but the Union Territory article says otherwise. What's the truth? Pgan002 04:50, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Shopping?
I have added a brief mention in the tourism section of Delhi as a bargain-hunter's paradise, which it surely is. However, I wonder if maybe it might be worthwhile to add a separate "shopping" section? People who know Delhi better than I may wish to insert in such a section their suggestions for the best places to shop. --Tomstoner 01:35, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
Hello? Would anybody get upset if I added a section entitled "shopping." I know, I'm a guy, but I like to shop. Only problem is that my knowledge of shopping in Delhi is limited. I just know it's great. --Tomstoner 00:36, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
Disparate Populations figures
We have two vastly different populations listed on this page. In the intro, we claim Delhi has 19.5 million inhabitants, while in the infobox right beside the intro, we say 15.3. The intro also links to the article on Thirty most populous cities in the world, which lists Delhi at 11.2. This is almost a 2x range. Can someone find a single source we can agree to stick with? Johntex\talk 02:58, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
- The Thirty most populous cities in the world article lists only Delhi Municipal Corporation (11.2 million in 2005). The 19.5 million is for the metropolitan area (Delhi NCT + satellite cities). The 15.3 million is the figure for the census-defined urban agglomeration. There is also an additional figure of 16.3 million for just the National Captial Territory which seems to be the main topic of this article. I think we should use 16.3 for the infobox and mention 19.5 in the introduction but make it clear that it is the metropolitan area. Polaron 20:31, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
Famous People?
Um, Lets see. Famous people from Delhi should at least have a wikipedia entry. In which case, who are: Sanket Gujjal? A simple Google reveals nothing. Gyanendra Kumar Sharma?
Removing names till someone can come up with references and/or a wikipedia article.
- This entire section is pointless. Any significantly famous people should be added in other categories. I am removing it. --Blacksun 18:52, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
Newspaper?
Rajan's MK Lines? Huh?
Note to editors: Please make sure you have *mainstream* information in this article. The above entry hardly counts as a mainstream newspaper, if it even exists.

Failed Ga
Good article so far, images are good, nicely writted etc but the main problem with the article so far is that it needs references. I seen 0 of them. Thanks --Jaranda wat's sup 18:07, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
