The book is about Cora Sharpe, a Hollywood screenwriter who is eight-and-a-half months pregnant by her ex-boyfriend, an attorney named Ray. Concerned that she might not survive labor, and therefore be able to communicate with her baby, Cora begins to write long letters to her unborn child. Interdispersed with these letters is the story of how Cora got to the situation of the first letter that she writes. This includes the meeting of Ray, the death of a close friend William of AIDS, and Cora's diverse and intense friendships. Including her bi-polar best friend, and co-writer Bud. The story continues with the kidnapping of Cora's grandfather, who is stricken with Alzheimer's, from his nursing home and take him back to his hometown of Whitewright, Texas. This is done by Cora and her zany mother Viv, a retired costume designer now collector, (who owns among other things the red shoes of Wizard of Oz fame) and Bud follows. The story then concludes with the birth of Cora's child.

Disguised as a paper back beach novel, this book uses beautiful word play, and internal dialogue to describe in reasonable depth, the plight of a certain type of modern woman. Douglas Adams summs it up quite succinctly on the back cover saying 'Carrie Fisher writes like the natural heir to Dorothy Parker'. A modern, very funny and moving, more accesable To The Lighthouse.
