So... Where do we go from here?
This page is clearly just a starting point. I don't even know where to start, but I figured a Common Gameplay Elements section was warranted, and the series page will give us a place to dump and expand on the allusions to the Divine Comedy portion. Other Media clearly fits, as well.
I'm inclined to include a rough timeline for the series as well, though I'm not sure if this could be handled in an encyclopedic manner. Cheers, Lankybugger 19:33, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
- I think one next step would be to start some re-linking in the other DMC pages to this one when the link's subject is the series as a whole, rather than the first game. --Boradis 20:19, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
- I've done some writing tweaks. Is there a DMC logo already uploaded and properly tagged that we could stick at the top? --Boradis 02:02, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
"Series innovations?" I dunno
It's just four points about how DMC2 contributed to the series. If we're going to have that, it should also list how games 1 and 3 contributed. And it should lose the language about "despite people being mean to DMC2, it helped make DMC3 so popular." --Boradis 20:27, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
- Good job on the rewrite. Like I mentioned in the creation of the page, I just copied and pasted a bunch of stuff. The Series Innovations was originally from a Devil May Cry 2 article item (before I decided to go with a less POV item), though I do stand by my conviction that DMC2 introduced a crapload of items considered staples to DMC3 gameplay. Should we comment on the backlash from DMC4 going multiplatform?
Just a question, but should we include this in the article? It was covered by a couple different news sites so it probably warrants a mention somewhere, but I'm not sure if it should be mentioned here in the series page or as a portion of the Devil May Cry 4 development section. Thoughts? Cheers, Lankybugger ○ speak ○ see ○ 04:08, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
- I say no. Unless and until something notable happens in the real world as a result, online complaining and fanboy kvetching are the furthest things from relevance there is. Besides, have you got a cite from a reliable source saying it matters at all? If not, it's not. --Boradis 04:32, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
- I only bring it up as I've seen it on a couple of news sites and it prompted Christian Svensson of Capcom's senior management to actually respond, which tells me that they probably got a lot of mail regarding it. I'm not pushing for an entire section on it or anything, but a sentence or two would probably be appropriate. Cheers, Lankybugger ○ speak ○ see ○ 13:37, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Context
I added a context tag to the article. I believe that it lacks enough introductory text to be easily understood by a non-player. Assistance with correcting this would be appreciated, since I have no interest in joining DMCTF (due to, hmm... personal disagreement with some of the methods used, which I shall refrain from discussing...) but would desire some improvement on the DMC series article anyway. Thanks to everyone who helps. --Warp L. Obscura 05:56, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
And do feel free to remove it once sufficient consensus has been attained, the things are eyesores. --Warp L. Obscura 13:38, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- I agree. Unless anyone really objects, I'll yank it in a day or two. --Boradis 20:16, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
Innovations?
Which game was it where you first had to change the attacks used in your combo so as to maintain the style rank? --Warp L. Obscura 13:38, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think DMC2 had it, and the article doesn't say. So I guess it was three. --Boradis 20:22, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- DMC3 was the first to introduce a quick-change button for melee weapons. DMC2 used the L2 button to quick-change your ranged weapons which was a part of maintaining that game's style ranking... it gave you time to close with your opponent if you were farther away. However, firearms themselves were powerful enough that often you'd finish your foe before you could close (especially with Ebony and Ivory), so the tactic was only really viable against boss-characters. Just thought I'd add that. Cheers, Lankybugger ○ speak ○ see ○ 04:44, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- No, he means where you have to use different attacks constantly, with or without the same weapon. Like in DMC3 where you can't just use Rebellion's Combo 1 over and over and over and expect your style ranking to rise. Did DMC2 have that requirement? --Boradis 06:33, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- I don't believe it. I remember once attacking one of the Zombi Tanks with Lucia and using the same attack (R1 + Fordward) all the time. The rank was raising, slowly but real. --Alexlayer 07:32, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Another note... why are we calling grouping three games together an innovation? Not only has it been done before, it doesn't really affect the gameplay. The Anniversery Collection should be removed from the section. Midaki 01:42, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
DMC PSP?
THere has been an announcement of a PSP version/sequel, but that was when the PSP was first released, and no title, or information, or anything, has been released since. Should we mention it? Midaki 01:47, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
- Right now I think it's safe to say that it's been abandoned. As no information has surfaced, I can only conclude that the game barely made it to the alpha stages of development before being canned, perhaps due to the relatively low numbers of PSP sales compared to the DS. As there's literally no verifiable information regarding the game, it's not worth mentioning. Cheers, Lankybugger ○ Yell ○ 00:21, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
Soul Calibur III
I really wish Dante had been in SCIII, but he wasn't. Granted we have a cite supporting that it was planned but didn't go through, but is it really worth including? The bottom line on a fact like this is "here's something that didn't happen." It's kind of fancrufty. --Boradis 21:08, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
- It's already in Dante's page there is no real need for it here. Unless of course he is included in Soul Cali 4, wich logic seems to support, who would be stupid enought that having the right to a popular character for free and not use it? -凶 23:57, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, he's planned for SC4? Cool. In that case, we could put that info on this page and mention the SCIII non-event in that context. --Boradis 02:49, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
- Whenever he is planed or not is not clear all there is are as always rumors, but Namco still has the rights to use him in a Soul Cali game. -凶 02:51, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
Dreamwave comic
Think we should make an article for the comic adaptation of DMC1 by Dreamwave Productions? I think it only got to two issues before Dreamwave went bankrupt, but that's at least as many issues as the manga. I had like issue one, but don't have it now. Next time I go to a comic shop though I'll check through the bins. There's no immediate need for this, it just happened to cross my mind. Anyway, I'll add a note on this page. --Boradis 21:42, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not sure how many pages does it have? are they enought to make a plot at least as long as the manga one right now? Other suggestion might be adding it to the manga page and rename it to something like "Devil May Cry comic adaptations". -凶 23:57, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
They planned 4 but only made 3. It ends with Virgil's final defeat and dante being knocked out by Trish. - The 4th Snake 21:50, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Plot
Shouldn't we add a plot of the series here, nothing long but it needs something.-凶 16:30, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- I'm wondering if the plot summary we have here is needed. It just repeats the plots of the games as listed on their pages. --Boradis 21:41, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
Yes. but as you said nothing too long, like the series revolces around Dante son of the dark knight Sparda who saved earth 2,000 years ago.- hirf —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hirf (talk • contribs) 21:49, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
VG Assessment
This is in regards to the request made at the VG Assessment page. Dunno why you asked for assessment and GAC at the same time, but what the heck. I'm rating this article as B-class, Mid-importance. Here are a few tips to improve the article.
- The screenshot you have in "Common Gameplay Elements" is awful.
- The plot section opens with DMC3, without ever having explained that they don't go in order and that DMC3 is the first chronologically.
- Overall, the Plot section and down is good, but above it is a little weak. The lead needs to be expanded, explaining more about what the DMC series is about. The only thing I know about the series from reading the lead is that it's a game series about a guy named Dante, and he has conflicts with demons around the world. It needs to summarize the series a little better.
- Expand the series origins a bit, if you can. What you have now is good, but this needs to be a lot larger, like the "Development" section for a game article.
Good luck at GAC! After the work you guys have done getting DMC 1, 2 and 3 to FA in the last few weeks, I'm sure that you can make this article just as good. --PresN 05:59, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
Holy joke!
Or rather, "divine comedy!" I've been bummed about the (rightful) removal of "The Divine Comedy" I ORiginally added, so I've been looking for some cites of some sort. I know MobyGames is a reliable source for stuff like sales and aggregated reviews, but what about the trivia there? I'd like to use it, but I'm not sure if it's any better than IMDB or a Wikipedia trivia section. --Boradis 08:28, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
- I think it will be considered just like any one of those, there seems to be a conflict when using sites that have user-contributions. -凶 14:56, 30 April 2007 (UTC)~
- Well nobody can deny that the references are there, though I know nothing of Wikipedia's rules, so I won't really comment. Mayhap some small thing prevents from being added, either way, I know not.
4 Chronology?
The plot section says
The currently unreleased Devil May Cry 4 takes place last.
Then later it states
It is not yet known if the events in Devil May Cry 2 are considered canonical, and all subsequent releases in the series have been placed chronologically before it (including the upcoming Devil May Cry 4).
The first says 4 is last in chronological but then says it isn't, which is right?
The order is 3,1,4,2. - The 4th Snake 21:51, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Is there anything official that can be cited here to confirm the chronology of what is posted in the main article? -- Aoikumo (talk) 05:04, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
Ah, found one myself, in the Game Informer interview with Kobayashi from the Official Game Informer site Article:
GI: So chronologically, DMC 4 will take place after DMC 2?
Kobayashi: The way we want you to see it is it will go from 3 to 1 to 4 as a flow of time.
GI: So are the events of 2 being discounted from the timeline?
Kobayashi: If you events of 2 are in the timeline, they occur very far after 4. In 4, the Dante is a little bit older than the Dante in DMC 1.

GA On hold
I have some considerations before I pass this:
- The image caption at the beginning: "The series takes its name from lead-character Dante's shop, around which the series revolves." The series revolves around the shop? Reword it like "a shop run by Dante" or something like that so it's less ambiguous.
- Plot section is just way too long. Condense it if you can; we don't need massive spoilers and such, 'cause the reader can just look at each article for detailed plot summary.
- Some minor MoS stuff- like unformatted citations in the "In other games" section.
Once you've done this, PM me and I'll take another look. David Fuchs (talk / frog blast the vent core!) 00:01, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
- Comment If the shop serves as the protagonist's central base of operations, then it may indeed be the central location of the series. Wouldn't be the only series to "revolve around" a shop either. --tjstrf talk 00:12, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
One more thing: It might make more sense to scrap the plot section altogether. Instead, take the games and each give a short plot introduction with a link to the main game. See Halo (series) for what I mean. It just seems a better way to organize it. David Fuchs (talk / frog blast the vent core!) 19:52, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
- I will work with the plot thing tonight (it's 4:00 pm here), thanks for reviewing. -凶 20:01, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
- I will write the section on my PC and post it withing the next two days.-凶 03:29, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
Comment: I'm going to be condensing the plot section right now. David, if you're online right now and about to fail the GA because of that, would you mind waiting maybe thirty minutes and checking back? Thanks. Cheers, Lanky TALK 00:14, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
- Alright, according to Open Office I've reduced the Plot section from 1395 words down to 657, meaning I've cut the plot section down to less than half of what it was while retaining most of the vital information. Is that good enough, David, or should I take a bit more? Cheers, Lanky TALK 00:54, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
- As the on hold tag has been on for more than 7 days, any reviewer can pass/fail this article, so I'm going to go ahead and pass it, as all of David's objections have been cleared up, as well as my own from a month ago, and the article looks very good now. Another feather in the cap for the DMC task force, it seems. --PresN 15:55, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. can we include the Japanese name for each of the Devil May Cry titles?
I was wondering if it is appropriate to include Japanese names of the Devil May Cry titles, since it's a series made in Japan.--Dark paladin x (talk) 13:10, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with Image:SternnDMCpwnage19841.png
The image Image:SternnDMCpwnage19841.png is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
- That this article is linked to from the image description page.
