Dune 45 = 45km from Sesriem Canyon

[edit]

I thought they are numbered in some kind of circle, starting with Dune 1 to 50 or whatever. Not sure about that at the moment.

This is also what someone told me there, in Namibia. I think they are starting in Walvis Bay / Swakopmund in a cirle clock- or counter-clockwise. Maybe I can check that one day. 80.139.154.143 21:36, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was recently in Namibia, and it is a common misconception that Dune 45 is named after the distance of 45km from the closest campsite. All of the dunes in the area have been given a number for identification, it is pure coincidence that this dune happens to be 45km from the camp.

I'm just back from Namibia, and I was told the "45" refers to the 45 degree-inclination of the dune... might be true, the way up there during sunrise was definitely "uplifting".

All the major dunes from the coast are numbered - starting from the closest to the coast to the furthest. Dune 45 is the 45th dune from the coast. Regards from Namibia --Chtrede (talk) 17:17, 21 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
