Victory — for Britain or New Zealand government?

[edit]

User:Gob Lofa has three times changed the infobox and text of the article to say the outcome of the East Cape War was a British victory on the basis that "even by 1866 only a fraction of the British force could have been born in NZ. The majority were British-born." [1][2][3]

Premier Frederick Weld introduced the policy of military self-reliance in 1864. When forces were sent into the East Coast area to exterminate the Pai Marire movement, they were drawn — probably entirely — from colonial (New Zealand) units, as well as kupapa Maori, and those units are all identified in the infobox. The country had been run for a decade by a "responsible government" and British forces were already in the process of being returned. The British were not involved in this conflict at all. Rubbish. The settlers identified as British. If you want to emphasise that they weren't part of the regular British military that's fine, but I'm not allowing you to pretend there was only one government in NZ. The Maori had their own power structure. Gob Lofa (talk) 19:20, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
