Adding Section to address the disparities in education that women receive

Hi, I am interested in expanding this current article by including information regarding the differences in education that women face in Nigeria. According to WikiProject Nigeria one of its goals is to create a body of articles that accurately depicts the history and cultures of Nigeria and Nigerian peoples. Additionally, it goes on further to say making sure to especially include the voices of the women in Nigeria. Currently, the article that exists on education in Nigeria has no information concerning the fact that there is a disparity between the education of males and females. Not only are boys much more likely to attend school that Nigeria women, they are also more likely to be the focus in the classroom giving them an unfair advantage over women. This is an important issue to discuss because women are often the back bones of society and in order to society to thrive and flourish, that backbone needs to be strong. I hope to address some of these issues and the work that is in progress to change them. I would appreciate any feedback and I look forward to contributing to this project. I am writing this article for a class assignment. Could you perhaps provide useful feedback to make the article more neutral? I feel as though the gender disparity issue is an important one to be addressed.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Mpyles91 (talkcontribs) 05:14, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
Perhaps you are correct, my advice is to create an article in your sandbox addressing such issues you have raised here.
Your contribution is presently in mySandbox/Women's education (Nigeria); would you like me to move it to your user space?. Here you can work on it and will be here to assist so as to make certain it is ready for main space.
Once this is ready, you can incorporate a snapshot of your newly created article into the Education in Nigeria article without so much having to take over the entire acticle.
Also, please remember to sign your name on talk pages by using four tildes (~~~~) or by clicking if shown; this will automatically produce your username and the date.Otelemuyen (talk) 09:30, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Revertion of Mpyles91's major changes

Standard editing practice at Wikipedia is that if you attempt to add something, and others revert it (disagree), it's up to you to make your case, first, on the talk page for the change. Simply going back to your version (especially when it violates policy) is edit warring, and is a big no-no.

However, this does not infer that your contribution is unwanted. You can find your contributions in mySandbox/Women's education (Nigeria). If you are happy with the title and the idea of creating this article, say and it will be moved to your mySandbox OR simply follow the details posted on your talkpage.Otelemuyen (talk) 19:26, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi, please allow this to stay here until I finish editing it so that I can get credit in my class. Thank you Mpyles91 (talk) 02:52, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Suggestions

I can understand why you're article on female education is being removed. It does have a biased point of view. You point to all of the negative things about Nigerian culture that make it more difficult for women to obtain and education, but you do not discuss any progress that Nigeria has made (or not made) over the years or what Nigeria is currently doing about the problem. The current section is very shows Nigeria in a very negative light and does not show a neutral point of view; it would be wise to try to insert the authors of your sources into the article so that readers know it is not your personal opinion but that of the author that you are sharing. I also think that you may want to simply link to the CEDAW page rather than actually spending an entire paragraph summarizing the educational goals of CEDAW. In addition, you may want to have someone check your grammar before posting the article. I edited some of the grammar, but you really should try to be as grammatically correct as possible before putting an article up because it adds to your legitimacy. I enjoyed the depth and subject matter of your addition to the article and it was very interesting.Kristianedosomwan5 (talk) 03:29, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

So I feel like towards the beginning I did a good job remaining neutral but as I got more into the topic I did become biased. I will work to change that to ensure that the entire article stays neutral throughout. I have been trying to insert the authors sources into the article to let the readers know that it is the authors views that I am presenting. I do think that you are right concerning the CEDAW information or perhaps I can make what is there even shorter. Thank you so much for your comments Mpyles91 (talk) 04:43, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Hey Malcolm! First off, I just wanted to say that you've done a nice job so far. I knew nothing about education in Nigeria before reading this article and I feel like I've learned a lot. I'd like to go section by section with my recommendations to help you most efficiently.

Lede: I really enjoyed reading your lede section, although I'm not sure that it is entirely appropriate for this article. I think that the information that you include there is great information but might be better if you incorporated it into other parts of your article. History: the part that begins "Traditions were major.." Is a bit awkward. The sentence after that needs to be reworded, and I challenge you to think a bit more about this section. What specific traditions had to be overcome? What parts of Nigerian culture kept women from going to school? In addition, delete the last word ("thousand") from that paragraph. Disparity Section: Correct one sentence to "These gaps in literacy are largely due to differences in educational attainment" or something like that. What do you mean when you say girls are "needlessly out of school?" The phrase "women are fewer than men" sounds a bit awkward. Reason behind Disparity I would change the second sentence to something like "So-and-so say that one prominent cultural view is that women should stay home..." Change the phrase "age-long belief." I totally agree with your statement that "the attainment of overall human development in Nigeria is beign obliterated by this unnevenness in educational accessibility," but I'm not sure that it belongs here because you don'g go on to talk specifically about overall development. Perhaps you can move this somewhere into the "significance" section. Significance Because this section is one big paragraph, it is a bit difficult to read. I would try to break it up into subsections. What do you mean by "it will be impossible to build the knowledge necessary to eradicate poverty and hunger..."? What do you mean by women become more "disposable to their economy?" Current Policies of Progression Section Try to read the section over for grammatical errors. Also, this goes for all your sections, but you need to fix the way you capitalize your titles. (I made the same mistake, don't worry- it is kind of counter intuitive). Only the first word of every section should be capitalized, so instead of being "Current Policies of Progression," it would be "Current policies of progression." Recommendations for Reform: This section absolutely must have citations or it will be considered original research. Also, I think that User: Kristianedosomwan5 makes a good point about the neutrality of the article. It would be great if you could find some research that supports the progress that Nigeria has made, although overall you've done a great job of compiling research.(K Gagalis)

Whew okay, that is a lot of comments. So appreciated!!! So I realized that after it was taken down, I uploaded an older version that still had a lot of errors that I fixed in the workshop so now I will have to go back and refix them. But, I have begun addressing some of the issues that your brought up, namely areas where things were worded awkwardly. Also, I have added the names of the people who make some statements so that it is clear that it is not just my own views. I will go and do more research and look at the current progress that has already been made in Nigeria and then add that information as a new section. Mpyles91 (talk) 04:40, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Suggestions

The sections on Women’s Education were through and well written. I liked how they covered a lot of interesting and relevant information, and you clearly did a lot of research to write all of this. However, I think that each section is pretty lengthy and could be cut down a bit to make them easier to read. Specifically, I think the “Significance” and “Current Policies” sections are very long and definitely should be more concise. I also strongly agree with the previous suggestion: your entire article contains bias because you portray aspects of Nigerian culture in a negative light to prove that women are lacking a good education in the country. Try to revise your writing to sound neutral, perhaps by using more direct quotes and citing who says them to give the quotations legitimacy. TasneemIslam1025 (talk) 03:47, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi thank you so much! I realize that I had uploaded the rough draft not the fixed version but I am working on it still so it is fine. I have tried to break up the paragraphs but some information is repeated so I can take it out to make it shorter. I have also added more direct sources. Mpyles91 (talk) 04:37, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Addition of Adult Education content

Hello Wikipedians. I'm an undergraduate student at Rice University taking a course on Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities. It is my plan to edit this page as part of an assignment for that class. The scope of this page currently ends at University and leaves off many of the initiatives and programs in the country to raise adult literacy and help match a skilled workforce to the job market's needs. I would like to add a section on adult education and job training. If you go to my user page, you can find a list of sources that I will cite in order to expand upon this page and section. I invite all relevant Wikipedians to offer their thoughts on these additions, and I look forward to working toward the common goal of knowledge proliferation.

Dnelson 14 (talk) 04:02, 19 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello all, I am still moving forward with my plans to revamp this page. You can find a complete list of my sources on my user page, and my sandbox will also contain some of my work for this article as well as others I am working to edit.

My edits will follow this structure:

1. Restructuring of Tertiary Education and addition of Vocational Training subsection: I will be creating official subsections so that this section of the page is easier to navigate. I will also be adding information regarding the vocational training programs in place in Nigeria.

2. Addition of Informal Higher Education Section: This section will focus on literacy programs and other professional development programs in Nigeria

3. Editing of Women in Education section: This section currently only contains a link to the Female Education in Nigeria Page and some vague information about the benefits of educating female populations. I am going to update that section such that it succinctly summarizes the linked page and is more relevant to the page Education in Nigeria.

Thanks, Dnelson 14 (talk) 20:19, 2 October 2017 (UTC)

Review of article

Hello fellow Wikipedians!

I recently read this article, and would like to provide some feedback on the content.

This article seems to have improved a lot recently, and it is now much more comprehensive, with more reliable journal articles and NGO reports as references. I think the article is very well written, with clear and concise language that is appropriate for Wikipedia articles. The sections are well organized and cover a comprehensive breadth of material.

I have some suggestions for how you can further improve this article. More material can be added, such as quantitative data and statistics of percentage of boys and girls attending schools, whether there is a quantified correlation between level of education and income, and what percentage of graduates from universities attain what types of jobs. Other additional content could include more specific educational plans or initiatives within Nigeria and a review of the overall effectiveness of the educational system in Nigeria. Furthermore, the lead paragraph can be expanded a little bit.

I think the most important thing that can be improved is that more links should be added to and from other Wikipedia articles to increase traffic.

Good job with this article so far, and I wish you the best in improving it!

Article Review

Overall this article is well done. Its structure is logical and easy to follow, and it is fairly in depth. However, I would like to comment that this article fails to mention the efficacy of the education system. Also, the lead is extrmely short and it would be beneficial if it could be expanded, perhaps to include the different types of education under each division. 6ibberish (talk)

Islamic education

I will admit to a prior lack of knowledge-- I came here to remedy this. The article seems to primarily cover European-oriented educational institutions, and, as far as I can tell, seems to greatly clarify the relative rankings, and will greatly help me evaluating articles. But about half of Nigeria is Moslem, and I assume on the basis of other countries that children from these regions follow predominantly the traditional moslem pattern of education , and the brief treatment here seems to confirm this .It would be very helpful to have a fuller discussion. I'm aware the fundamental structure of Moslem education is world-wide, but surely there are at the very least some Nigerian institutions of greater or lesser prestige, and an pattern of eiova;ee or articulation with tjj Eropean=base institutional structure.
