Women's roles

What where roles of women in Elizabethan times?

Removed passage

I removed the following. The first sentence is incorrect: drama was regarded as a low art form at the time and English drama made little impact in Europe. The other is a masive generalization that requires many justifications. Please revise before returning it. The Singing Badger 19:31, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

For 50 years, drama had been the highest form of literature in English, and the Elizabethan writers had gained a reputation through much of Europe, as attested in Don Quixote and elsewhere, as the finest dramatists since the Roman Empire. After the closing of 1642, the late 17th-century extravaganza of Restoration comedy was the only drama of real significance in English until Irishmen such as George Bernard Shaw, John Synge and Oscar Wilde revived the art more than two centuries later.

I removed the phrase Jeronimo, a prequel to The Spanish Tragedy, and changed it to Jeronimo now known as The Spanish Tragedy. Jeronimo was just the name given to the play durning the Renaissance. To my knowledge there is no prequel. Nevermind, there actually was a play called _The First Part of Hieronimo_ that was writen after Kyd's death by an unknown author. I made the correction.

My teacher had an very nice poster that was labled I shoot take a picture of it. In the meantime if anyone finds a really nice picture please put it up.

Removed 2 names from players list

I removed the names "Susan de Vere" and "Countess of Pembroke" from the list of players. There were no women acting on the stage in England until the Restoration.Ugajin 11:12, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Two lines removed

"The theatre was envied by great tribes across shoehorn, they tried to copy the theatre by making the hammy stadium, however in the early 1880's an egg fell on them and their plans were and their plans were andy baish." Obama Listed as a Renaissance Playwright

Timeline

Hi. I've added a timeline of playing companies to this article. It is located at Template:English Renaissance playing company timeline. It's implemented as a template because I believe it will be useful in multiple articles. I'm sure there's still much room for improvement, and as time permits, I'll continue to tweak it over the next days? weeks? months? years?. If you have notes but are uncomfortable editing the somewhat complex timeline syntax, please comment at Template talk:English Renaissance playing company timeline.

I'll mention that much of the information currently comes from the germane Wikepedia articles; this is not ideal, and I've begun citing many dates within the timeline code itself (using comment text which appears after "#"). Phil wink (talk) 17:34, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

I've now also added a playwrights timeline. This contains data I put together long ago, but this one's comparatively easy to fix if anyone notices an error. This seemed the only article that this timeline was appropriate for, so I have not templated it. However, if anyone thinks it also belongs elsewhere, that can certainly be done. @Scottandrewhutchins: I've added Munday. But Chettle and Tourneur can barely be counted dramatists, and Legge is so obscure that I can't even find any list of his plays (much less with dates). Chettle's birth and death are also so uncertain as to be impossible to stuff into a timeline. I don't particularly object to including them, but in order to do that we need reliable sources for the four relevant dates: birth, death, first play, and last play. --Xover (talk) 09:30, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

OK thanks. I guess I'm reading too many older texts that attribute The Revenger's Tragedy to Tourneur. I was probably puffing Chettle because of his apparent contribution to Sir Thomas More, since it's one of the better known mostly not by Shakespeare plays of the period. --Scottandrewhutchins (talk) 19:59, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

List of playwrights and actors

Isn't it a bit confusing to lump these all together? From what I've read relatively few people did both other than Shakespeare and Jonson.--Scottandrewhutchins (talk) 03:22, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

@Scottandrewhutchins: I agree. Absent some reason I'm not seeing just now, these should be split into separate sections. And it's worthwhile to question whether the article should have such a list at all (vs. a prose section hitting the highlights). --Xover (talk) 04:59, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
