Suggestion re: Definitions

[edit]

Macrakis, Since you invited help at Minsky... Maybe, before elaborating on the ethics, it would be a good thing to get agreement on the definition of "philanthropy" at Philanthropy and List_of_philanthropists, because they currently look very different:

Philanthropy consists of "private initiatives, for the public good, focusing on quality of life"... Philanthropy is different from charity, though there is some overlap. Charity aims to relieve the pain of a particular social problem, whereas philanthropy attempts to address the root cause of the problem.

versus

philanthropy; donating his or her time, money, and/or reputation to charitable causes. The term may apply to any volunteer or to anyone who makes a donation, but the label is most often applied to those who donate large sums of money or who make a major impact through their volunteering...

I agree that both those articles can be improved, and in fact, I contributed to the definition you cite. It's still possible to make progress on the ethics aspect. --Macrakis (talk) 15:38, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
