Franco-British Union

[edit]

it was proposed by French Prime Minister Guy Mollet that France and the UK create a Franco-British Union, with common citizenship - this wasn't new - in 1940 when things were going very badly for France the British Government suggested to the-then French Government a political union with Britain as a way of reassuring the French that Britain would not make peace with Nazi Germany and abandon France to the Germans, and in the hope that this would breathe new life into the-then demoralised French Army. Needless to say, nothing came of the idea.
