Michel Gondry

The award-winning director Michel Gondry made a video of GIMME SHELTER in 1998. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.140.144.97 (talk) 19:40, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Cover Versions

Tom Jones did a cover of this song as well. I don't have the reference here with me, but it should be easy to find. It is to be found, at least, on a 4 disc compilation of Tom Jones songs. It might have been a song he recorded with a "contemporary" band after the "Tom Jones revival" if I may call it like that, in which case it might already be listed here. I'm not sure whom he would have recorded this with if he did. 71.222.209.98 06:22, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

An absolutely superb version of Gimme Shelter was made by acoustic guitar player Michael Hedges (1953-1997) on the album Strings Of Steel (1993).

I would like this to be added to the list of cover versions.

The page currently states that Ann Wilson covered Gimme Shelter on her solo album Hope & Glory, but this simply not true. There is, however, a live version on YouTube with vocals from her bass player in 1995. This is the only Ann Wilson version of this song I know of, and information stating otherwise should be deleted. Gypsywitch13 (talk) 01:44, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Hello everybody, I have no idea why a certain subculture is always left unmentioned when it comes to the topic of cover songs. Anyway, Impulse Manslaughter from Chicago, Illionois did a rendition of the song on their 1989 album 'Logical End'. See http://www.discogs.com/Impulse-Manslaughter-Logical-End/release/1031879 (track 4) and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M561_YUvnsE

Lyrics

Who keeps deleting the link to the lyrics? And why, exactly? I'd like a good reason, because personally, I think lyrics are a pretty relevant and useful thing to have when it comes to songs.

Arsmith, 11:53, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

If you go back a couple of edits in the History of the article, you'll see that I deleted them last, with an explanation. i.e. that the link was dead and may well have been a copyvio in any case. I can see that the current link is live but the question of its status remains. Wikipedia has a hard-and-fast policy on reprinting entire song lyrics in an article, i.e. you don't do it (snippets are fine to illustrate a point, just as if you were quoting from a book in an essay or review). The question of linking to sites which reprint the lyrics and themselves may be in copyright violation is still debated - at the moment the consensus seems to be that it's okay to link to such sites as long as there's no clear evidence that the copyright owner is actively trying to have them removed - a bit wishy-washy IMO (see WP:SONG and discussion on its Talk Page). Personally I agree with you that linking to lyrics is useful for a song article, but the fact remains that most lyrics are copyright and are reproduced on the net without regard. Altamont Free Concert

I would like a section added about the Altamont Free Concert disaster, which I understand was the topic of this song.

--Hippiepunkpirate 18:35, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Uh, since the song had already been released when the concert took place, I think you'll find Altamont had nothing to do with the song's conception; rather they took the name of the documentary on the concert from the title of the song. Cheers, Ian Rose 23:11, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter.ogg

Image:The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter.ogg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

The image Image:LetitbleedRS.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

 • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
 • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

The plot of this song

The Departed

Wasn't this featured in The Departed? That's a pretty notable fact given how successful that movie was. 208.253.155.193 (talk) 19:24, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

The song is featured in almost every Scorcese movie, see [1]. Besides, there is a list of other movies where it was used, I think it's a good basement for "In Art" chapter, after checking. --Figure19 (talk) 18:35, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
