What is in a name?[edit]

"HMS Brev Drageren (also Brevdageren) was the Danish let brigger (light brig) Brevdrageren,.." The Danish name for this ship was Brevdrageren (which translates as Letter Carrier or Messenger)- is there an English source for the mis-spelling as Brevdageren (the second R is missing)??, as in the article. Or should the spelling be corrected to Brev Drageren (also Brevdrageren)? Viking1808 (talk) 18:01, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Place of construct6ion?[edit]

@User:Acad Ronin: The article states that the ship was constructed at Nyholm Dockyards but this source states that she was in fact constructed at Bodenhoffs Plads. Perhaps User:Viking1808 can help?Ramblersen2 (talk) 13:45, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lorentz Fjelderup Lassen[edit]

@User:Acad Ronin and/or User:Viking1808: The Danish-language Wikipedia article about Lorentz Fjelderup Lassenl [da] (copy pasted from the first edition of Dansk Biografisk Leksikon) mentions that "1802-3 førte han fregatten Rota på togt i Middelhavet og 1805 briggen Brevdrageren i en evolutionseskadre.". The article states that "and in 1805, under captain F.C. Fisker, was a member of the Danish home squadron". I am not able to judge weather both of these pieces of information can be correct. I am not even sure what an "evolutionseskadre" is or what it is called in English. Could either of you include the information from the Fjelderup Lassen article in the article in a way that makes sense? Cheers.Ramblersen2 (talk) 10:01, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ramblersen2, my best guess is that "evolutionseskadre" could translate to "training squadron", but we need someone with more knowledge of Danish naval terms than I (zero), to weigh in. Regards,Acad Ronin (talk) 12:43, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

And another question @Acad Ronin: What are the criteria for placing the article under its British name (HMS Brev Drageren (1807)) rather than its original Danish one (HDMS Brevdrageren (1801)). I do realize that it spent more time in British servide and that the article contains far more information about its British career. But information about its construction and design relates to its Danish origins and it does always seem a bit confusing to me to have another year included in the title than the year that the ship was launched or first commissioned. And I mist say that I am even more puzzled why the article HMS Salorman (1808) is not placed at the main space HDMS Søormen (1789)), considering that she was constructed in Denmark and spent 19 years in Danish service while she only survived her British capture by two years.Ramblersen2 (talk) 10:01, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ramblersen2, I have no dog in this race. I started the articles with English sources, and then Viking1808 often helped me back fill with or add on Danish info. So, I would be completely content to have you move the articles, with suitable redirects. The issue of the date in the title is a difficult one if the vessel is not listed under her original name. Someone using Winfield and looking for HMS Salorman (1808) would be confused by finding HMS Salorman (1789), as there was no such vessel. Hence the need for redirects that preserve the information. In fact, I would argue that best practice would be automatically to add in redirects so that users coming from different sources can easily find the article.
