The version of Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup mentioned in the list is not based on James A. Bland's song, but on James 'Beale Street' Clark's Get Ready to Meet Your Man [1] and should not appear in this list. Also, the discographical information on Lavay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers is mixed up with the twenties band.

Origins[edit]

It seems to be the common wisdom these days that James A. Bland wrote this song. But where is the evidence that he had anything to do with it? There's no sheet music. There's no copyright office entry that I can find. And I haven't found anywhere that this attribution was ever suggested by anyone prior to the 1990's. So I have my doubts, and I've tiptoed around them in starting the "Origins" section of this article. I didn't change the article opener, and I didn't really challenge it in what I wrote. But I sure would like to know where the person is getting their information.Ramseyman (talk) 03:01, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
