Proposed redirect

[edit]

The whole article should be changed to redirect to hand washing. Axl 17:53, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it has some good points and could probably make a good 'common ideas and misconceptions' section in hand washing, as the merge tag I placed suggests. SamBC 12:23, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed redirect hand washing to hand hygiene

[edit]

I strongly disagree with your editing of the hand hygiene article and your assertion that the article on hand hygiene be redirected to hand washing. It should be the other way around. Hand washing should be rediredted to hand hygiene. Washing your hands is one way to obtain hand hygiene. Hand hygiene includes hand washing and the use of other procedures to obtain good hand hygiene. I am reinstating the orginal revised article and would appreciate it if you did no further editing to the article until it is discussed on the hand hygiene talk page. Thank you very much for your cooperation--JSHibbard 19:32, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Hand Hygiene

[edit]

This article was revised to conform to Wikipedia format before your tags were placed on the article. It is not written like a "magazine" and the references are excellent and supportable. I do not agree with your assessment and as author I am removing you tags. Please do not retag the article until you justify any future tags on the Hand Hygiene talk page first. Thank you for your cooperation.--JSHibbard 19:20, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

I've responded on your talk page. Antelan talk 20:05, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The article does not (and did not) conform to Wikipedia guidelines on formatting. Indeed when I changed the lead sentence to conform, I see that JSHibbard reverted it. Axl 08:48, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. I like the facts and citations of the article, but it really doesn't read well. It reads like a pamphlet at a doctor's office. Scott5834 00:16, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the Editing and Formatting Help

[edit]

I would like to thank the person or persons who helped clean up this article. Since the author is new to Wikipedia, it is very difficult for new and inexperienced authors to include all of the editing and formatting used on Wikipedia. Thank you.--JSHibbard 18:19, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

TAG

This article or section contains instructions, advice, or how-to content. The purpose of Wikipedia is to present facts, not to teach subject matter. Please help improve this article by removing or rewriting the how-to content, which may qualify for a move to Wikibooks.

I do not understand why you keep insisting the hand hygiene article is teaching. It is debunking myths and misinformation and presenting the facts "truths" about hand hygiene.

The hand washing article teaches the following:

Personal hand washing To maintain good hygiene, hands should always be washed after using the toilet, changing a diaper, tending to someone who is sick, or handling raw meat, fish, or poultry. Hands should also be washed before eating, handling or cooking food. Conventionally, the use of soap and warm running water and the washing of all surfaces thoroughly, including under fingernails is seen as necessary. One should rub wet, soapy hands together outside the stream of running water for at least 20 seconds, before rinsing thoroughly and then drying with a clean or disposable towel.[1] After drying, a dry paper towel should be used to turn off the water (and open the exit door if one is in a restroom or other separate room). Moisturizing lotion is often recommended to keep the hands from drying out, should one's hands require washing more than a few times per day. [2]

Why was the hand washing article accepted by Wikipedia? There is some inconsistency here. Please explain!--67.65.59.153 15:13, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Hand washing should be "cleansed" of teaching language. The sentence beginning with, "Conventionally" is one of the better sentences in the paragraph you highlighted, since it talks about what is done, not what should be done. It's descriptive, not normative. Sure, by describing the norm, you'll end up being normative to a certain extent, which I think is your goal (i.e., getting people to wash their hands properly). There's nothing wrong with the material - it's just a matter of phrasing things in an encyclopedic manner. I hope that's constructive. Take care, Antelan talk 17:06, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
