What is Turkey?

[edit]

Is it a land? Is it a nation? Is it A race? help me out...--OttomanReference 07:02, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The lemma is most unfortunate. Fortunately the redirect is gone since History of the Republic of Turkey is not a replacement for the idea behind this article. --Dschwen 07:04, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dschwen; more explanation, please. What is Turkey?--OttomanReference 07:14, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(moved the following from my talk page --Dschwen 07:24, 22 May 2006 (UTC))[reply]

That is fine. However what is turkey for you? Everyone uses it for different things. The bottom bar uses it for Turks, The inclusion of history of Anatolia means Turkey as land (Trace+Anatolia) I have hard time recognizing the main concept.--OttomanReference 07:10, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see, either way it is a touchy subject. If we make it turks we're excluding some people but geographically would have to increase the scope. I'd go for the land concept. It'd be interesting to have a histoey of the predecessor states and empires leading to the modern republic of turkey. Feasible? Also on Template_talk:Timeline_of_History_of_the_Ottoman_Empire I had left a note on the links which you just changed back. --Dschwen 07:18, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually Ottoman Empire pretty much covers what I had in mind already. This article could be an even wider overview at best, linking Ottoman Empire to History of the Republic of Turkey. --Dschwen 07:46, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A suggestion ...

[edit]

Thought I'd make a bit of a suggestion for this page: since the word "Turkey" is, when looked at over the whole course of history, a massively ambiguous term (i.e., it can mean a number of quite different things and entities—Anatolia (sometimes including and sometimes not including Thrace) and its cultures and civilizations, the Ottoman Empire, the modern Republic of Turkey), why not just make this "History of Turkey" page a simple, uncluttered disambiguation page (because right now it's terribly cluttered, unattractive, and quite unhelpful), redirecting to the history of the areas and/or civilizations it would be used to refer to in English? —Saposcat 11:02, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I belive Dschwens main addition is his colection of the nice bars and timelines. This helps the reader in finding what they are really looking for. One picture, or graph is equal to millions of words. I like it, also I take Saposcat valid position, which means it can be work on it.
I dont see a need for this page, it is confusing. This should either be disambiguation page, or refer to Republican Turkey with links to Ottoman, Seljuk history and so on. --A.Garnet 14:10, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

please - Turkey is not such a special case. We don't make such a fuss at History of France or History of Italy. Gaul (France before the Franks) and the Etruscans (Italy before the Romans) are treated there as a matter of fact. We have a "history of X" article for every country X, treating the history of that country's territory. The Turks arrived in Turkey in the Middle Ages. So what? There will still be a short section summarizing History of Anatolia. No need to merge, that's why we have the {{main}} template. The present version is not a finished article. It is a skeleton, inviting you to flesh it out into a nice presentable article. See de:Geschichte der Türkei for a nice example of how the article should end up looking. dab () 06:25, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

History of Turkey?

[edit]

The concept is not as clear cut as HISTORY OF X. As the terminology has been used for very different concepts. It is better to keep the page as it is designed. --OttomanReference 00:01, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
