Also called Gingrich?

[edit]

Several astronomical sources of rather obscure origin have the name Gingrich for this cluster. Who (or what) is (or was) Gingrich? DannyCaes (talk) 13:08, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Simbad gives the name "Gingrich 1", but doesn't say why. Gingrich was the first to describe the star-forming region and numbered 19 stars. Gingrich 1 would normally refer to one of those stars. The Simbad usage may be incorrect applied to IC348 as a whole, and then got copied (or mis-copied) by others. I don't think there are any Gingrich 2, Gingrich 3, etc. clusters.
Astronomer Curvin Henry Gingrich was editor of Popular Astronomy starting in 1926. He probably deserves his own article. Praemonitus (talk) 02:24, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
