Also called Gingrich?
[edit]Several astronomical sources of rather obscure origin have the name Gingrich for this cluster. Who (or what) is (or was) Gingrich? DannyCaes (talk) 13:08, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
- Simbad gives the name "Gingrich 1", but doesn't say why. Gingrich was the first to describe the star-forming region and numbered 19 stars. Gingrich 1 would normally refer to one of those stars. The Simbad usage may be incorrect applied to IC348 as a whole, and then got copied (or mis-copied) by others. I don't think there are any Gingrich 2, Gingrich 3, etc. clusters.
- Astronomer Curvin Henry Gingrich was editor of Popular Astronomy starting in 1926. He probably deserves his own article. Praemonitus (talk) 02:24, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
