Redirects for discussion?[edit]

@Amorymeltzer, Plantdrew, and Abyssal:

Hi,

This is the first time I have run into this tag, but IIRC, this is my first fossil taxon article, but I have about 8 more to do on my short list, mostly molluscan index fossils for the Greenhorn Limestone, the Carlile Shale, the Mancos Shale, the Post Rock region and architecture, and then moving on to the same for the Niobrara. (For the latter in particular I am engaging a museum curator.) Then there is the whole European context.

The Redirects for discussion tag is a bit sparse I am uncertain what my action is. The contexts for replacing this protected redirect is to create an article about the species. The Cretaceous molluscs are foundational to identification of Cretaceous strata, and finding only redirects to Inoceramus in its present state has been quite a disappointment as I write about the geological units.

A stated acceptable reason for replacing a protected redirect is that the "the target article contains virtually no information on the subject".

However, reading Abyssal's comment, it seems that the intention is that information about any Inoceramus species be placed in the genus page. Does this mean that my correct response to the tag is to merge the new article somehow into Inoceramus? The role of each index species in the Western Interior Seaway and corresponding European inland seas is more complex than just stating "species, genus, author and year of description" (and what I have here for the I. cuvieri is just stub). Their diversities are interesting if not diagnostic to interpreting environment and ecologies. Also, several species have been reclassified since publication of papers depending on the species. Sessile animals depended on certain species for living space. So, after adding several paragraphs for several species to the page, things might seem crowded.

I now realize that the lead had no link to the target of the replaced redirect. I have now provided one, but a bit clumsily. I also forgot to link the target to the new page.

So, please, more clearly explain my responsibilities in responding to this tag.
